"Everyone, you are dismissed," Maestro said shortly. "Except...Daniel, may I speak to you in private?"

Various mutters and murmurs rose up after we were let loose, probably some of them about me. Like I cared. I packed up my violin slowly, taking my sweet time to reach his office, shuffling my feet rather obnoxiously on the way there.

"Daniel," he said, voice stern, "what exactly were you thinking?"

"What are you talking about, Maestro?" I asked innocently.

"Do you...have a problem with Bach or something, Daniel? Is that what the problem is?"

"The Brandenburg Concerto, sir?"

"I'm just going to say it out straight. What was your purpose in not playing what was written on the page in front of you?"

"What, sir?" I was still playing dumb.

"Why did you," Maestro said, gritting his teeth, trying to contain his impatience with me, "play the music from the soundtrack of Jurassic Park during our concert?"

"Oh, that," I said, suddenly recalling. "I thought it was would add a nice touch to the musicality of the piece." I tried to hide my cheeky grin from him.

He sighed, rubbing his temples. "Daniel. I know Henryk personally," he said, referring to my teacher, "and I know that you're a very good violinist. Is there something wrong? Something going on at home?"

"Nope, nothing," I replied.

"Well, it's nothing personal, Daniel, but I'm going to have to excuse you from La Primavera unless you can learn to play what's on the page and play together with others instead of making up your own part."

"I understand, Maestro." I bowed my head to him. "I'll take my leave now. I enjoyed my time here." Which was a total lie. I just felt like I owed him the courtesy of having good manners before I could leave and never see his face again.

"That's wrong, Daniel," my teacher said, quickly losing his patience with me. "You're taking it much too tempo rubato. This isn't a solo piece. You've got to play in time with the others. The beats in Bach are set in stone; you can't just play whatever you want."

"..." I kept silent, biting my tongue. I knew what my snappy retort would earn me.

"Let me tell you something. communism. The composer is the one in charge of how a piece sounds, how it should be interpreted, the tempo. You have absolutely no control over it. What you have control of is your bow. It has to stay exactly with the others' bows. Get it? You can't just make up whatever you like. Music is communism, but you're playing democracy. You just can't do that, Daniel."

Like hell I will, Maestro. I respect classical musicians; they're pretty chill, and they work hard. But I could never be one of them. There's no way I'm followin' the crowd; I'm gonna do what I like, and people are gonna hafta deal. My parents are gonna hate me for getting kicked out of orchestra, though...

...But damn. It seems I can't do anything right. Those kids who tied me to tree and beat me and called me a dirty yellow chink, my parents who were always disappointed in my dismal performances as a violinist. I never improved at the violin. Nothing motivated me. All the things my parents want me to do, nothing motivates me to do them. I'm just going through the motions.

I've almost lost my passion for music. It's only real artists like Cold Crush that keep me going. I've been listening to them a lot lately. And sneaking up to the attic late at night to write my raps.

My sound is me, and it always will be. Music is free. It can't be ever held back. To be fake or true to yourself, to die or live it. The choice is yours; just make sure that the voice is yours.
I'm so bad. A teen angst one shot was just too much to resist, especially with the awesome quote that inspired this.

"Music is communism, but you're playing democracy."

Go listen to "Free Music". It's a good hip-hop song, if you're into that kind of stuff.

Daniel Armand Lee, aka Tablo of Epik High, belongs to himself. The quote was actually said by his violin teacher, and of course "Free Music" belongs to Epik High. I don't own anything. Don't hate me if you ever read this, Tablo... |D;;

hehe.... *pokes first comment*

i been here before!

but readig a second time gives me new things to think about.
I really find Daniel interesting in that he doesn't feel like his parents understand the lack of motivation to improve in things they force him to do (piano?)

hmm... the Maestro has a pretty darn conservative view of music. Isn't there a little room for interpretation, Maestro? I mean look at La Corda d'Oro! :3

it also means something a bit different now that I really know and love the map the soul album (totally on my chirstmas list to 'santa';) I don't have much more to say, and I need sleep now so my own music sounds nice tomorrow (I am doing the communist version of it, but I don't mind because I am the leader... after ms. eddy of course :XD:)

Yay teen angst! Lol. I really enjoyed this and I absolutely love how you incorporated the quote into it. I'm really glad that you posted it and you're definitely not bad ;P

LOL. x]<3 Haha, really? ^///^ That embarrasses me a little. I got inspired by the quote, and I enjoyed writing this, but I didn't think anyone would absolutely love it. ^//^

Thanks for the fave, btw! ♥

Yep, I really do like it :D You definitely shouldn't be embarrassed ;) Epik High lyrics are perfect for anyone looking for inspiration, even if you have to look up the English translations to get it X33

You're welcome! :)

Thank you very much! ♥ Epik High is just... *sigh* Their lyrics are so poetic and full of truth. So beautiful. ♥ Hahaha, actually, "Free Music" is in English. :3

You're very welcome! I totally agree on Epik High, it's so nice to listen to music that's meaningful and totally awesome simultaneously X3

Haha, fail for me >~< They've just had Korean stuff until now so I keep forgetting that some of the songs are all in English even though I really love those ones. All I need to do is learn Korean so as to understand their Korean stuff. :meow:

^^ I love it, I love it, I love it~ *is totally a part of High Skool*

Haha, no worries, I'm the same way. x3 I do the same thing with the Clazziquai Project too sometimes. x] I'm trying hard to learn Korean! ^^v I hope to become more proficient soon~

I really want a High Skool shirt. Hehe

Lol. Are you taking classes to learn Korean? Or teaching yourself? I know like 5 words of Korean but I don't know where to go to learn it >~<
ChromaticRose Featured By Owner Jul 14, 2009  Hobbyist Writer
Me too! :3

Nope, I'm teaching myself. x] I already learned basic Hangul; I'm just trying to learn spelling, pronounciation, and vocabulary, of course. I've been scavenging the Internet for good places to learn; that's the only thing I can do. ><;; Well, I mean, besides checking out Korean books from the library... x]

Having Korean friends helps though. :D

I really like this.... nice way to incorporate the quote!

hmmmm.... you always make me wonder if the character is expressing your own feelings, but here I can tell it probably isn't.

I don't see how you are 'bad' by posting this, it is well written and so interestingly ironic... I mean, the whole democracy in communism.

Tankyo~ ^-^

Hehehe, that's the mystery, now isn't it? ;D
LOL, in my opinion, some of the best writing incorporates some of the writer's persona/feelings in it. ^_~

LOL, I'm not really a fanfic writer... ^^; I end up making charries terribly ooc... However, I have no idea what teenage Tablo was like, so I had free rein over this fanfic. x]

And thank you for the fave! ♥
