Butterfly Paradise

This was a study that I did for my Painting II class.  (The piece is actually two studies, one for each half of the canvas.)  We were supposed to create an icon that represents who we are.  I chose a butterfly because I’m a sensitive person and I’m easily hurt by hardships.

The title of this piece comes from Coldplay’s song “Paradise”.  I thought of the song’s line, “The wheel breaks the butterfly.”  When I hear this line, I imagine a wooden wagon wheel crushing a butterfly.  This is fitting for me because I’m sensitive.  I also thought of Heimlich’s words (from A Bug’s Life): “Someday, I will be a beautiful butterfly, and then everything will be better.”  These words and the song “Paradise” have the overall message to keep moving forward.  To me, the butterfly has this same connotation.

I may use art to temporarily forget about my problems.  When I’m completely immersed in making art, I may forget about the stress and problems in my life.  For me, art is somewhat a “safe haven”.  (This is also why the butterflies are resting in the right half of this piece.  They can rest in a grassy field for the night and not have to worry about predators.)

I hope that you enjoy this piece as much as I do.  God bless!
