🐑 Sent as Sheep
Jesus never promised His followers comfort. In this verse, He speaks plainly: “I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.”
Sheep are not predators. They are not intimidating. They are vulnerable.
This is the calling of every believer.
To follow Christ is to accept that the world will not always understand you. Your convictions may be mocked. Your obedience may be questioned. Your faith may be tested. Jesus does not hide this reality — He prepares us for it.
But notice something powerful: He sends us.
We are not wandering into danger by accident. We are commissioned into it by Christ Himself.
⸻
🐍 Wise as Serpents
Biblical wisdom is not naivety. Jesus does not call us to blind idealism.
To be “wise as serpents” means:
• Discern motives.
• Guard your words.
• Recognize spiritual battles.
• Avoid unnecessary conflict.
• Understand the times you are living in.
Wisdom is strategic. It sees danger and does not pretend it isn’t there. It knows when to speak and when to remain silent. It understands that not every battle needs to be fought publicly.
Christian maturity includes discernment.
⸻
🕊️ Innocent as Doves
Yet wisdom alone can become cynicism. That is why Jesus pairs it with innocence.
To be “innocent as doves” means:
• Keep your heart pure.
• Refuse to retaliate in cruelty.
• Maintain integrity even when wronged.
• Respond with grace, not bitterness.
We are not called to manipulate like the world manipulates. We are not called to deceive like wolves deceive. Our methods must reflect our Master.
Christ Himself embodied both qualities — perfect wisdom and perfect purity.
⸻
⚖️ The Tension We Must Hold
Many believers lean too far one way:
• Wise but hardened.
• Innocent but naïve.
Jesus commands both.
The Christian life requires discernment without corruption and purity without foolishness.
That balance is impossible in our own strength. It requires daily dependence on the Spirit of God.
⸻
🔥 Reflection Questions
1. Where in my life am I facing “wolves” right now?
2. Am I responding with fear — or with faith?
3. Have I sacrificed innocence in the name of wisdom?
4. Have I sacrificed wisdom in the name of kindness?
⸻
🙏 Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You sent Your disciples into a hostile world, and You still send us today.
Give me eyes to see clearly and a heart that remains clean.
Make me discerning without being bitter, bold without being harsh,
and pure without being foolish.
Guard my mind with wisdom and my spirit with innocence.
In every encounter, let me reflect You.
Amen.
Remember, God loves you and so do I.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank you so very much!!
This verse is my mother's favorite verse. One of her favorite movies is 'Gone Baby Gone' (for those who havent seen it, its a VERY serious movie thats... pretty graphic in some parts to say the least) and this verse is spoken in the beginning of that movie. The main character is Christian and in the movie he faces struggles while solving a kidnapping of a child. And the character, played by Casey Affleck, is relatable in the movie in so many ways.
So I thank you for doing this. So very much.
God bless you! Amen ❤️
