Description

Gift art for Kestus featuring his character/'sona Deimos, made with a combination of sandblasting and chemical etching to get the different white and greyish areas.

Krythea drew the line-art for it, which I then imported into Inkscape and turned into a vector file so I could scale it to fit the mug and cut it out of vinyl. Weeded the outlines as normal for sandblasting (the brighter areas), and re-masked them with nail polish after sandblasting to protect them from the etchant, since past experience has shown it tends to "dull" the sandblasted finish to something smoother and less bright. Secondary weeding around the nail polish trying to keep crisp edges but also not peel any of it off took a while. The horns, beak and wing-looking spike things I etched with a newer bottle of etching paste, and the chest fluff and ear insides I used some older paste that left a more mottled finish to resemble the texture of fur. Scrubbing all the nail polish off at the end took aaages, but the end result was so very much worth the work.

This is probably my favourite of all the etched/sandblasted mugs I have made so far because look at it it turned out so good aaaAAaaAAAaAA. I picked up the mug at a thrift store and was just waiting for the right project to use it, because it's a hella cool-looking mug (and probably capable of bashing in skulls — got a real solid, weighty base on it), and it deserved an equally cool purpose. So glad it ended up in Kest's hands.

Clip-clop, clip-clop...This critique was brought to you by The Yule Goat Gang, Merry Critmas!

That's a mighty mug! Until I saw your gallery I did not realize it was possible to create such designs on mugs by sandblasting and chemical etching manually (well, thinking about it, I don't think workshops that made them use some sophisticated machinery).

It is really impressive how neat and clean the resulting design looks on the mug, and I would like to acknowledge the amazing job Krythea did: not every image that looks great being flat still looks good wrapped around a cylinder.

It was enlightening to read your comments on the process, I especially like how you made use of an older etching paste for a different texture: it is crucial to know the properties of your chosen media and use them for your advantage when a less experienced user would either throw away the old paste or would not know why the result was unexpected.

And it also makes me happy to read that you are glad how it turned out. Kestus is so lucky to get such a nice present!

With this I'd like to wrap up (no suggestions for improvement this time for I am a total noob) and wish you a great 2023 with many pieces that bring you satisfaction.
