In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In Vlaanderens Velden

In Vlaanderens velden bloeien de klaprozen
tussen de kruizen, rij aan rij,
die onze plaats aanwijzen. En aan de hemel
blijven de leeuweriken vliegen en dapper kwelen,
tussen 't geschut beneden nauwelijks te horen.

Wij zijn de Doden. Enkele dagen geleden nog
leefden we, voelden de ochtendstond,
zagen de gloed van de avondzon,
beminden en werden bemind en nu liggen wij, gevelden,
In Vlaanderens velden

Zet onze strijd met de vijand verder.
Met falende handen reiken wij u over
de toorts. Aan u haar hoog te dragen.
Doet gij dit niet, dan zullen wij in deze aarde
geen rust kennen, ondanks de klaprozen
In Vlaanderens velden.

Major John McCrae

This is too lovely, very understated but more poignant because it is. Thank you for this beautiful tribute to the people who gave their lives for their countries. Hug Heart

At my boarding school there was a plaque on the wall commemorating those who had gone to war and died. They would have entered the army straight from school as Second Lieutenants and would have been the ones to lead troops over the top. I was told the average life expectancy was five weeks.

Nice drawing C and a beautiful poem. WWI spawned many in England and elswhere. An excerpt from Dust, by Rupert Brooke:

When the white flame in us is gone,
And we that lost the world's delight
Stiffen in darkness, left alone
   To crumble in our separate night;

When your swift hair is quiet in death,
And through the lips corruption thrust
Has stilled the labour of my breath --
When we are dust, when we are dust! --

A very moving piece!  It was supposed to be "the war to end all wars."  Today was veterans day in my country and the local air museum placed 1,000 luminaries on their lawn to honor those who served.  You could place the name of loved ones who were veterans on them.  I placed the names of those in my family who served and in going over the list I noticed that counting myself there were five wars represented.  That means that almost every generation in my family lived in a time of war.  Thank you so much for this wonderful drawing.
