I wanted to try doing text art... so here is my first try.

Used the Verdana font and played with Illustrator CS4 - so 100% vector.

I love this quote - something I always end up writing down on the silly questionnaires etc... as "what is your favourite quote?" type thing.

Critism is appreciated :)

Quite nice for a first attempt at typography, I think Like many things, there are no shortcuts when it comes to this genre of art, and it takes quite a lot of practice, as well as understanding of composition/use of space, while never diminishing context.

I like the emphasis here on certain words by increasing their size, to give them the necessary weight, however the constant skewing of vertical versus horizontal makes the viewing experience somewhat confusing. Also the "slimming" alteration you've applied to some of the text disturbs the overall flow.

It seems that what you're trying to achieve here is simplicity, especially with the use of one font. While you've succeeded amiably by an astute sense for communicating with colour, the overall effect, in itself, could be much improved by further experimenting with the position/sizing of the text to achieve what I think is key to any design... balance

Like I said, keep at it, if this is something you're interested in. Working solely with typography is certainly onerous, however that being the case, creating something truly compelling is that much more phenomenal.

Thank you for the critism - I really appreciate it and it certainly gives me something to think about.

I'm wanting to try more text art as I've always had a passion for typefaces specifically, but never had the courage to try putting something together like this.

This really helps me consider things for future pieces - so I thank you a lot for this.

It was my pleasure, Shar

I have an especial admiration for typography, and can certainly appreciate the dedication required to creating something both simple, yet persuasively effective.

Perhaps you could refer to text art pieces here on dA, to get a better idea of how you could work around (or break!) the rules of design, here are some of my favourite pieces:

With text art, I feel it's all about what you're trying to say, why are you saying this, and how.

It's a good idea to come up/work with phrases and keep playing around with different fonts (or design your own!), for continued improvement. Like I said, there are no shortcuts to a lot of things. Your courage is most admirable... it's no easy task

Keep at it!

Yeah I'm gonna study some more text art and see if I can come up with something of my own.

I have a good idea at the moment, but it's kinda fan art ish but it's something that Paul (my bf) will appreciate so even if it's not that awesome, being the key word :giggle:, I know he'll love it :D

Thank you for supporting me here, I really do appreciate it Katie

I definitely love the quote
Did you make the quote by yourself?
ChewedKandi's avatar
Oh no, I heard it about 15 years ago and it's stuck with me ever since :)
