FFM Day 2: Regrets

FFM Day 1 (CHALLENGE): Chase
“Grab them!”
My sneakers pounded against the concrete as I ran. Don’t look back, don’t look back, don’t look back!
   I looked back.
Half a dozen armed men charged at me from behind. I willed my burning thighs to work faster. The bag in my hand was my only comfort even as sheer panic settled in my chest. I forced it aside. There was no need to panic.
“Get to the museum,” Sylvia had told me over the phone before this mess started, “I’ll meet you there!” But the museum was halfway across Detroit. In the middle of the day when everyone and grandmother is out on the streets.
I ducked through wave after wave of crowds. I gotted shouted and cursed at relentlessly, but I didn’t care. The men plowed through like crazed bulls. I glanced back for half a second. My body collided with another, and I went down.
They surrounded me, pistols poised to shoot if I so much as blinked wrong. There was nowhere to go.

I was twelve when the rains started.
Hours turned to days. Days turned to Weeks. Then months. Then years. Sometimes, it would only sprinkle, a misty spray of the ocean in the middle of no where. Other times, it poured. God's wrath flooding the streets with the black, churning waters of hell. The clouds never parted. The rain never stopped.
    Humanity never stood a chance.

"I know it sounds crazy, but you have to believe me." The stranger before me pleaded.
I took a step back, "Believe you? I don't even know you!" Every fiber of my being told me to run, but I held firm. "What you're telling me is...it's not even--"
"Possible?" She laughed, "That's what I thought, too. And yet, here I am," Her eyes turned serious, "I would never lie to you, Dee, you know that. I am your sister."

NaPoWriMo Day 18: Jitters
Deep breathes,
Your lungs expand
And take in the still air.
You are calm.
(I'm terrified)
Slow exhale,
Slower, slower,
Let your body relax.
You are prepared.
(I'm not ready)
Imagine success,
Visualize your goal
And achieve it.
You are the best you can be.
(I'm not even good)
You’ll be okay.
This is only a trial run,
The draft before the final.
One mistake won't matter.
(It will matter)
Take another breath,
And begin.
Your fingers slip,
But you keep going.
(It was one mistake.)
You started too soon,
But you keep going.
(Then another…)
You got off-beat for just a moment
But you keep going.
(And another…)
It's over before you know it.
People applaud you,
Praise you for your performance
(They're lying)
You dust yourself off,
Make note of your wrongs,
And smile.
(As if smiling would help)
What's done is done.
(Give me another chance.)
You did your best.
(I’m better than this, I promise)
And that's all you can ask for.
(How did it go so wrong?)

Welcome to Flash Fiction Month, day 7.
You'd better pour yourself a stiff drink, because today's especially nasty challenge requires a very particular mix of ingredients.
We aren't certified professionals, but we have it on good authority that some of these elements could prove volatile under certain conditions. So for your own well-being we recommend that all participants wear the provided protective gear, and make careful note of the required measurements. One drop more or less could spell disaster! But get this particular mixture just right, and we promise, it will be well worth your while.

A decision she would soon regret in the morning.

They surrounded me, pistols poised to shoot if I so much as blinked wrong. There was nowhere to go.

The people scattered. A black SUV screeched to a halt beside us. The door popped open and out a skeleton of a woman, clad heavily in a wealthy aura. Her heels clicked along the sidewalk. Sylvia. “Hand over the grail.” She demanded.

“Why? So you use it for yourself? I don’t think so!” I shook my head.

Sylvia narrowed her eyes dangerously, “Don’t make me kill you.”

I chuckled, “I knew you were twisted, but that’s a bit much, don’t you think?”

“You’re not giving me much of a choice.” She let out an exasperated breath, “You’re an archeologist, Jesse. You should’ve stayed in the library like I told you!”

I rolled my eyes at her. “You don’t know me at all, do you? I don’t even like archeology. I only majored in it because it sounded interesting. News flash, Sylvie, it’s not.”

The was a moment of silence. I let her take it in, let it burn a hole in her pretty little skull. My friend of six years, I knew this would hurt her, but she needed to hear it. As expected, her hard expression went from confusion, to sadness, to anger in the span of a few seconds. I got to my feet.

“Then why are you even here?” Sylvia finally broke the silence.

“Because,” I clutched at the strap around my torso, “I realized a couple things. One: treasure hunting is a lot more fun than sitting around stacks of books all day, and very lucrative. Two:” A smirk played on my lips. The imprint of the Holy Grail itself pressed through my bag.

“Who wouldn’t want to stay young forever?”
FFM Day 1 (CHALLENGE): Chase
God I hope I did this right....

IT'S JULY AND I'M 3 DAYS LATE!!

But hey, first day was the Fearless Fiction challenge and, in a nutshell, I needed to use three elements from three different deviants. A character, a setting, and a MacGuffin.

Character: A scholar who’s discovered they have no passion for their particular area of learning Vocable
Setting: In the midst of a high speed chase through downtown Detroit Psycho-Semantics
MacGuffin: The holy grail leslieweslie

Thank you guys for you're inspiration and I'm sorry if this isn't exactly correct. I got to the point where I just gave up and said, "Welp, here we go!" But I had a lot of fun trying to piece these elements together :3

I looked to my sister, my real sister, playing in the sandbox just out of earshot. I watched her grope at the grains as she tried desperately to add on to the pile she claimed as a castle. She was only six years old. The woman before me had to be well into her twenties, older than me. She suggested time travel. I suggested insanity.

The woman sighed and removed the scarf from her neck. My blood went cold. There, just under her chin was the dark spot of a birthmark identical to my little sister's. "That's impossible...You're..." The more I looked at her, the more I saw my sister in those eyes. She was telling the truth.

The woman replaced the scarf and took me by the shoulders, the only thing keeping me from fleeing. "Listen to me, Dee, this is important." Her grip tightened as if to emphasize her point. "Whatever happens, you must--!"

White light flooded my vision and she was gone. Everything was gone.

(WC: 249)

9:11 pm

    DO NOT PRESS

It's not that I didn't understand it. The sign was very clear, I understood the message just fine. But when you're face-to-face with a giant red button, there's only one thing to do.

    I pressed the button.

The world trembled around me. Not just the ground, but the air seemed to vibrate with an invisible force. Books shivered off tables, priceless vases shattered to the floor. Something in my head buzzed.

Then it stopped and the world resumed as if nothing had happened. Except for me.

I should have never pressed that button.

(WC: 96)

11:31 pm

I had everything perfectly planned. My laptop was charged. I had goldfish crackers and granola bars at the ready. Iced coffee and energy drinks lined my refrigerator just in case I so much as yawned. All I needed to do, was type.

What I didn't plan for, was the cat.

I didn't think I needed to worry about her, I mean, she usually just minds her own business. Not today. Today, Jasper had an agenda.

Seven hours into my paper and I find myself putting the last few sentences into my conclusion. I was so close to finishing, I could practically feel myself wrapping up into my bedsheets after so many hours hunched over a computer screen. Suddenly, the appearance of brown tabby fur blocked my vision. Jasper's back paw had landed directly on the power button, suffocating it under adorable little toes. I noticed too late.

The screen went dark behind the purring mass. Seven hours of work, gone.

And I never pressed the save button.

1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?

A little over a year, I think. It feels like forever, though!

2. What does your username mean?

It really doesn't mean anything. I just thought of using something fun! (maybe someday I'll change it...)

3. Describe yourself in three words.

   Quirky, Mature, and Simple

4. Are you left or right handed?

I'm right handed, but my left hand is my favorite.

5. What was your first deviation?

Elxen by CherryBerry545 This tiny little picture was my first deviation. When I think back on it, I drew this nearly two years ago! fun things happened in freshman art class. I kinda wish it was larger...

6. What is your favourite type of art to create?

That's a tough one, because I don't really have a specific type of art that I like to make. I like making colorful things though, whether it be some doodle or a full on picture. Or just doodles in general.

7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

Digital art, definitely. There are so many things you can do with digital art nowadays, it's mind-blowing!!

8. What was your first favourite?

Deadlines by Zombiesmile By. zombiesmile.deviantart.com/. This short little comic was absolutely hilarious! I could relate to it because I'm such a huge procrastinator. I just couldn't stop laughing!

9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Most of the art I favorite is typically humorous, fanart, or starry (galaxies, stars, etc.). I'm a sucker for astronomy, I'm sorry...

10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

z-doodler.deviantart.com/ definitely. I absolutely love their comics and art style! (One day I hope to be a comic artist on DA...)

11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

   dreamsinatin.deviantart.com/. I just think they'd be a neat person to meet. :3

12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

Whenever someone comments on my work, or if I find someone who I could strive to be like, it encourages me to work harder and improve. That's the most important thing, right?

13. What are your preferred tools to create art?

A pencil and paper. 'nuf said. (plus an eraser...)

14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

Either in my room or at school when I'm bored and have nothing to do. Both

15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

Finding out about the different themed months, like Inktober or NaPoWriMo. I always enjoy the challenge, even though I procrastinate some days and sometimes eventually end up giving up like I've done a few times....hehe

Happy Birthday Deviant art!!! It's been a great 15 years!! (even though I've only known it for a year...) #deviantartistquestionnaire  (really hope I did the tag correctly...)
