Paradise Lost e-book

Description

An annotated PDF of John Milton's literary epic Paradise Lost, designed for use as an e-book. Click on "Download" (probably above and to the left) to download the PDF.

Actually I need to add some front and back matter, such as Milton's introduction to the second edition, an explanation of the annotations, etc., but I have decided to present the book in its current form because I have no plans to do that other stuff in the near future (due to other projects). The PDF is perfectly usable as is, and a person can figure out the annotations by selecting the icons and seeing what happens.

The text typeface is Biblon Pro by Frantisek Storm; I thought it a cute idea to use a "bible font" for a biblically themed text. The little leaf that marks the beginning of each strophe is taken from Adobe's Kepler, however (specifically, KeplerStd-Regular). The front cover is done in Biblon Pro and the freebie font Fertigo by Jos Buivenga ([link]). The engraving of Satan up to no good is by Gustave Dore.

The typesetting software is my own stuff (not publicly released) using a modified xdvipdfmx as back-end. (xdvipdfmx is the standard back-end for the XeTeX typesetting system, which I did not use. :) )

It is a design preference of mine to make the page numbers (folio) correspond to the logical page of the PDF; thus the front cover is page 1. It makes the book easier to handle in a reader.

The text itself is my own version, constructed from public domain versions. The orthography is mine, more or less. The punctuation is mostly borrowed from elsewhere, and looks Victorian-era or early 20th-century to me, but what do I know.
