Artist Mission Statement

Why Do I Create All this Crazy Stuff?

What a great question. Such an important question. But to answer it, I think it is only fair to detail exactly what goes into one of my portraits – so please bear with me for a moment!

Generally, first off, I have to find the courage to ask a girl to model for me (this is thankfully much easier now than it used to be). Then I have to come up with a theme. I almost always ask my models if they have a fantasy they would like to portray. After a bit of brainstorming on that theme we have to decide on a costume and a setting. Then we have to juggle schedules to plan a photo shoot. I usually have to go out and buy some sort of fanciful costume or accessories, if I can't borrow one from someone else. I take about 150 photos during a photo shoot. I use multiple photos to draw from. I try not to add things that aren't physically there, for added realism, but sometimes I do have to use a different background (it's hard to find castles in suburban Detroit). A few hours of sketching out a mechanical drawing are followed by over 100 hours of drawing, usually from right to left, meticulously analyzing every inch and adjusting brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness, to improve upon the reference I started with. After a lot of "blood, sweat, and tears", and sometimes a little cursing, going back to parts I thought were done but now all of a sudden are not done, I am…about half-way done… Once I do reach that final pencil stroke, I have to assemble the paper, board, and mat together into a frame which I have previously planned out and ordered.

Alright already! Cut to the Chase - Why do you do it?

I put the time and effort into creating these crazy portraits…

For the joy it brings me to know that I have created something beautiful, and hopefully added something beautiful to the world.

For that euphoric sensation that comes when the shadows and light come together to form a very realistic image, that makes me say "wow" out loud.

For the look on my models faces when I unveil them, and the joy it brings to them when they see their fantasy come to life. That is a thrill that words cannot convey.

I'm not gonna lie - for the admiration and praise of my friends, relatives, and the general public. And for the pride of seeing my art on display in an exhibition. And for the occasional award and prize money. This doesn't make me a fame monster, or negate the previous reasons, it's just human nature, and it's important to me!

To make someone feel some sort of emotion – be it joy, sorrow, wonder, nostalgia – whatever story the viewer wants to create is the right one. Sometimes, to create controversy or make a statement. To have some sort of an impact on someone's life.

To inspire someone – anyone, from anywhere across the globe, to have the courage to pursue their art or the desire to do something greater.
