Eurotopia by Cheetaaaaa Eurotopia by Cheetaaaaa
This concept comes from the netherlandic bussinesman Alfred Heineken, who wanted to divide Europe into countless states, which are united as the United States of Europe. He published the idea with his book "The United States of Europe: A Eurotopia?"

But if you ask me, he was mad. =P

Not that bad an idea, actually. Utopic as it is, of course, but it will certainly help unite Europe. Within a generation, young Europeans would probably consign themselves to the federation as their "nation" instead of the now-irrelevant "nation-states" of now.

Nop, sorry. Altought I would like a federal or confederal europe, it is not posible. Why? You can see right now, down in the comments. I understand the first comment because it is english. But I don't understand a word of german. The states are based in culture BUT also in language. You can't put a federal state (with real politics) between too many people that speaks different languages. The language change the way to see the world. I don't see the world like a german for example (actually I don't see the world like a spanish too but anyway), so you can not support a multilanguage country of 20 languages or more.
USA it is based in same language, that's is the way that works. And for Europa that it is not possible because noone would like to give away his language.
And that, the impossibility of a true unite europe it makes me sad...

Greetings!

Not exactly. Languages change, and there have been pretty functional multilingual states before. Within a generation, almost all Europeans will be able to communicate with each other in English (assuming no major breakdown happens), and the younger generations definitely can as of now. In fact, the concept of a 'nation' is pretty young itself, and there is no reason why it shouldn't continue evolving. As it is, the definition of a 'nation' has changed from a lot of vague nonsense to "everyone who wants to", and -- as you say, what we think shapes what we do. People thinking of themselves as Europeans will be further stimulation to grow together, especially if facing hardship from the outside.

Just look at the borders of the states! He could at least have made them better.

XD).

Und dann auch noch der Name: Norikum! XD

Was hälst du davon, was er mit Deutschland gemacht hätte?

It will happen eventually, but it won't be for centuries.

When it does, it will be a natural thing and people will have decided how to make it happen, and it may be a global federation, rather than a continental one. Whatever the case, I see it being the convergence of expanding democracy, the weakening of petty nationalism, and the equalization of economies as the world is getting closer and closer to the same level of development.
