Edit: 4/13/12: I want to give a big thanks to :iconreikohattori: Your critique of this picture helped me so much! I went and edited the picture following your advice and BAM! waaaay better! :D This is an example of good constructive criticism and a very helpful critique! :D

oh, and I changed her name to Melani. Pronounced Meh-Law-nee, it means Ink in Greek :)

When the moon is bright and the sky overflowing stars, a mysterious spirit emerges from the pool, free and eager to see the world above. Mute and shy, Melani's dream is to catch those glowing lights in the sky and bring them down to light up her cold dark world. Only free as long as the moon is, few have ever seen her face...and few wish to. Who would every wish to watch ink drip down from those piercing eyes over skin paler than the moon she loves? So every full moon, Melani wanders the shore, a misunderstood soul just longing for light alone in a world of darkness....until the clear fateful night we met...

A little darker than my normal work, but it was really fun to draw!

Inspired by my dear friend :iconsanriko:. No, she isn't like a dark sea spirit dripping ink down her face. let me explain! :D

She drew this epic picture that was both dark yet gentle. (seriously, go check out her stuff, its awesome!) and I realized everything I draw is cutesy! I specialize in cute, but I needed to branch out a little, do something dark and creepy for a change... CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! :D So this happened! I must say, drawing dark creepy stuff is kinda fun! I know this probably isn't the creepiest thing you've ever seen, but I'll keep working and practicing to expand my horizons with my art

First of all, let me say, WOW. The impact of this piece is stunning, and visually, it's pleasing, but also very creepy.
The story you added really gave the picture a sense of depth and creativity.

Now, onto the critique!

Your technique on the face and hair is very good. However, I think the background could use some work. I'm not expert on drawing backgrounds myself (it's definitely not the easiest thing to do), but I think a little more time spent on those rocks and water would have made this piece that more invigorating to look at. There are a great deal of rock tutorials for SAI on deviantart and on the internet. I think your perspective is a bit off as well. The rocks in the back look a bit strange because they are still the same shade of rocks closer to the front. I think if you added some cooler tones to the rocks (slight blues and purples) they would appear more "alive" as well. The hair on the far rocks add to the appearance of 'flatness' because they are about the same thickness as the hair near the front of the image. To make it look farther away, a less opaque black may have been a better option. The water could have used a more 'mirror - like' quality to it as well. Water is one of the hardest things to draw in my opinion, so you did a really good job with the reflections. However, I think the water could have been a more saturated color to make it seem inky, and almost disturbingly dark. Her reflection, blurred in ripples, would have added a sense of realism too.
Lastly, a dash of color on her face really would have made this piece POP! Blood red lips or icy blue eyes could have made her seem both dead and alive at the same time. Now, unless you were going for a more monochromatic look, a sudden highlight of color is the way to go (in my opinion, of course).

I hope I wasn't too harsh, and good drawing ahead!! You did a great job, and your vision of this scene is positively excellent :D
