Laguna Beach

This is sunny Laguna Beach in Orange County. It’s named for lagoons, those world famous Southern California lagoons. I have no idea. Wikipedia says that while not actually included in any of the Mexican land grants that comprise California’s founding land documentation, Laguna Canyon, Canada de las Lagunas, ‘Glen of the Lagoons’ was marked on other land grants around the region. A sort of 1800’s version of ‘there be dragons’.  Maybe they misspelled ‘Dragonas’. You heard it here first. Well anyways, the guy who made it into a little town and did the city plan was Nate Brooks, who bought it in 1876 and homesteaded it. It’s been a tourist attraction since the late 1800’s, understandably, for such a gorgeous little beach town. A lot of the California plain-air art painters lived there, and there’s a respectably sized art museum there to this day. Half the city burned to the ground in 1993. I vaguely remember that. That’s California for you, you end up forgetting all the catastrophic wildfires. Laguna beach discovered the wonders of the goat for brush control soon after this, and they have a special herd of ‘firefighting goats’ wandering around doing their goaty thing on the chaparral hillsides…allegedly continuing unto this very day. Clear your brush. Say thanks to a goat today! Ok enough platitudes, enjoy the beach!

Or enjoy a comic book if the beach isn’t your thing. But really, who doesn’t love the beach?

Beautiful lighting, I love the foreground shadow which implies the sunny parts are a break in heavy cloud cover.

Beautiful picture. Have you ever tried to paint with traditional colors? For example, oil, tempera, watercolors, colored pencils ... I started (and continue) with photography, then I started painting in oil, having my photos as a model. I guess you would have no problems! it's funny, I assure you. Thanks for the Llama!

I have done many different mediums over the years, all those you mention and many more, but I find that I like oils the best.  Haven't done an oil recently though, I promised myself as soon as my house moves were over I'd get to do a painting. Well the moves are over, now I just have to find my canvases... :D

It is. Only problem is we get a lot of coyotes because our backyard faces the canyon. We get so many missing posters for small toy dogs and cats.
