Ser Duncan the Tall in trial by combat by chasestone Ser Duncan the Tall in trial by combat by chasestone
For the World of Ice and Fire.  I know big antlers on helmets are impractical, and I originally did a much more practical version, but we decided the big antlers made for a more dramatic image.  Also, Lord Lyonel (antler guy) loses the trial by combat.  Maybe the antlers had something to do with it.

When artwork based off of the books looks better than what the TV show can pull off.

Ser Duncan has to be one of my favorite historical figures in Westros.

This was one of my favorite illustrations in TWOIAF. You can just feel the anger and tension rolling of Lyonel, without even seeing his face. (Not to mention those menacing antlers!)

Dunk the Lunk, thick as a wall... :D and just as solid! Love this guy! Love your art! A shame we can't see Duncan's face, but oh well, your armour is truly exquisite.

You think that's impractical, the crests nobility used at tournaments got down right out of control later on:

Ser Duncan the Tall. The man who called himself Dunk, saw himself as somewhat dim, and won his first few fights simply because he was physically immense and incredibly strong. Squired by a nobody, with his initial knighting pretty much in question.

Became one of the greatest knights ever, with four pages recounting his exploits when most needed one or two. Also one of the few thoroughly decent people in that setting.

The guy was pretty much a walking fairy tale. But that's a good thing.

I loved the white armor! Which knight is him? It looks like a king's guard original concept. The yellow looks really nice aswell. I didn't see any yellow heraldry on the Baratheon army on the show.

The left knight is Duncan. The show gives the Kingsguard more golden, regal armour. Book wise, the armour is most, if not all white. And right is swag master Lyonel god damn Baratheon.

The show doesn't really have the soldiers wearing house sigils at all. Maybe small bits, or on shields, but nothing like what Lyonel is wearing. I wish they did.

I really like the simple lines of Duncan's armor.  He's told in The Hedge Knight that lots of ornaments and extra bits are just places for swords to catch so it is better to have simpler armor so swords will slide off.   This armor looks like the endpoint of that logic.   Great work!

Your artwork is by far my favorite in the World of Ice and Fire.   Great work!!

You're right. Duncan was an extremely practical man. Even as Commander of the Kingsguard, he more than likely made sure his armor would be as streamlined and devoid of frills and edges, while keeping to the colours of his order.

Near Perfect Image. I agree, large antlers on a helmet are impractical, but it does make it look more dramatic.

I love this image. The tension between the two knights is almost palpable, and I love how the darker knight is in the background but still commands the most attention. The antlers definitely help this so I commend you on your decision to put them in, really helps the image work in my opinion :D awesomely great job!

I'm always of the opinion impractical doesn't mean implausible, all through history people have done seemingly stupid things and been very effective. Very nice piece.
