Animorphs Hork Bajir Concept by CharReed Animorphs Hork Bajir Concept by CharReed
Another alien race from the series were the Hork Bajir. Despite their appearance, they’re actually peaceful herbivores. The Yeerks took over the species by infesting their brains and controlling their every movement, turning the species into fearsome shock troops.

Wow, it reminds me of the art of John Sibbick.

Did you consider matching the Hork-Bajir's visual design in artwork by David Mattingly or Romas Kukalis before settling on this design?

I used it for reference, then put my own spin on it :)

That's totally fine, and your art is great. However, I strongly believe that if an Animorphs film or TV show was ever made in the future, the Hork-Bajir and Taxxons, at least, should look like they do in the artwork by Mattingly and Kukalis.

Again, not saying your art is wrong or bad, just expressing my opinion for what I prefer. My apologies if I've upset you.

The artwork is based on Mattingly/Kukalis' interpretation of the descriptions. I'm not saying anything against their depictions, but at the same time, it's just their interpretation. If it were KA Applegate's artwork herself, I guess I would understand being a little more strict to sticking with the design exactly, but otherwise I feel like things evolve and change with the times and that's ok. Everyone's allowed to have preferences, but if a movie were to happen, it's going to have a spin on the designs from the covers. (And hey, at least I didn't base the model on the TV show version lol ;) )

Well, the Mattingly/Kukalis covers are official, approved by Scholastic. And, I would venture to guess that for the really important art depicting Andalites, Hork-Bajir, Taxxons, and the Leeran and other aliens on the aliens poster, K.A. Applegate personally approved those designs.

But I don't want to get into an argument with you.

This is like saying that Hermione Granger should be white, because she was white in the films and on the book covers from Scholastic might I add. However, as of recently the actress for Hermione in "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is a black woman. What does JK Rowling have to say to this? She never specified the nature of Hermione's appearance and argues with fans of the book (twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/…).  So, the theory that Applegate actually approved those designs, does not mean that's HER design. You don't judge a book by its cover, so don't judge what people see a character as in their head when reading a book or making fanart. Lots of movies aren't controlled by authors. The only way to know is to ask the author herself.

At least we know for sure that Jake, Rachel, and Tobias are white, Marco is a Latino of some sort, and Cassie is black.

I don't think you quite get what I'm saying. It really doesn't matter what the book says. The definition of a concept is: "Abstract idea". This is concept art. She's not going on and saying this is official art. So watching you make these comments on how she should follow a certain way is a rather mind numbing ordeal.

When you read a book, YOU get to imagine what things are. Char took designs and put her influence into them. That's it.

Hork-bajir not slaves to Yeerks.
Hork-bajir choose freedom!

I love the Hork-Bajir, they're just so fundamentally sweet despite their fearsome appearance. You captured that very well here.

Love it! My second fave Animorphs alien after Andalites. :D

It's fan art like this that makes up for us not getting an animated series or the second reprint of the books not succeeding. Thank you!!

Same! Even through all their faults, nothing in the series can beat Andalites for me :) I've got one coming up!

And thank you! I would absolutely love to do movie concept art for a film, should they ever make one :)

Great shading and texture - this looks pretty accurate based on the books. Animorphs were my favorite growing up; this is some beautifully illustrated nostalgia for me :)

Man, this takes me back. :D  Great job on the design.  I really like how you made the "teeth" part of the beak.

Is this a solo piece, or are you planning to do a set?

Playing around a little with the original creature design, while still adding a little twist of my own as well is super fun.

I have a few more pieces I'm planning on uploading soon, thanks for looking!
