Coloring White Characters by charfade Coloring White Characters by charfade
It's often I see amateur artists assume that white characters don't need highlights since they are "white" and they skip ahead right into adding shadows. ( or sometimes no shadows at all T_T ) It's not really a pet peeve of mine, but something that draws a concern when amateur artists don't take notice to it at all. I can not stress enough that a white character doesn’t mean the character is white. It actually it took me some time to grasp this concept as well so its not something I'm going to beat into anyone. I created this guide to help anyone who is still learning basic coloring methods.

= PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING WITH COMPLAINTS =

►This is more of a guide then a tutorial since I'm just basically hinting at coloring method concepts.

► This guide assumes you know basic photoshop / illustration programs. If you want to know how to do anything I suggested here you can look up plenty of wonderful digital tutorials on DA that have more of a in depth step by step process. [link]§ion=&q=coloring+white+chacaters#catpath=resources&order=9&q=coloring+tutorial

► No I do not think this is the only way to color, just one method I've used that seems to work out pretty well.

►Image of the group of white lions can be found here [link]

<--- Final Finished Work. ^_^ Enjoy!

►For further help in this area, please read "Why Shadows Arn't Gray" by RianaLD. This Tutorial give's more of a break down and explanation.

Every colour is a mix of many shades and different colours ! I think this is a very good guide, especially that how you pointed out the different colour shades in the lion photo. :)

My fursona is white and to this day, I still really have no basic idea how to color her. You have no idea how helpful your tutotorials are.

When creating eyes I leaned to make the highlights pop is to make the 'whites' of the eye a light grey (f1f1f1 - ghost white) and make the highlights white (ffffff - white). This is a great technique. Love your technique for painting the white tiger. You are an awesome artist.

I've never drawn a white character, but I definitely won't let this tutorial go to waste when I do!

This is a neat tutorial. If only there was a good equivalent for non-digital art...

I totally agree with you about this, white characters are not necessarily white! Some people don't seem to get that (and believe my I understand it, that above statements looks like it would make no sense xD).

XD thanks, really you can used any light color for a base color, I chose blue because it fits this character better. When I did pastel work they tell you to use different color paper, then I thought this should help with white characters. Sure enough, starting off with a different color seemed to help add extra depth.

yeah actually. This was going to be a black and white coloring tut, but needed more space so I kept it to all white. lol

Think I'm going to have to work on that one.

XD thanks, I also needed something so I can refer people too. When I suggest they should start coloring their white characters light blue or grey I get strange looks.
