Ishiro Honda's 1954 Gojira is meant to be a cautionary tale about our ability to produce powerful weapons and using them recklessly. When Dr. Serizawa created the Oxygen Destroyer, he feared that its potential for destruction could doom all of mankind. Like the radiation that mutated Godzilla, the Oxygen Destroyer is already deadly in small doses, but in even larger quantities, the super weapon can be utterly catastrophic. Honda wanted to use the film as a warning that if we continue using highly destructive weapons, we can doom our own future.
