Law of the Horde - Excerpt Ch 1

Chapter 1: Migration In the new morning light, a brown haired man turned his gaze across the horizon. He stood in the snow with his hands on his waist. The winter had been harsh, but soon spring would bring warmth back to the landscape. Hopefully it would bring cheer back to the people as well. Turning towards the rising sun, the man lowered his green eyes to the river beyond the mountains. It was hard to catch the water as it was so far away. Within the mountains to the south the underground springs were easier to access in the winter. To the west was a bay. It was nearly as far away from where he was now as the river was. Within the nor

Chapter 1: Lord and Master With a furious rush of air leaving his lungs, a young man strode quickly out of a tent into the desert landscape. He frowned deeply while he held his arms at his sides. His fists clenched tightly. With a growl, he spoke quickly, “I don’t want to!” His hands went up and he punched one fist into the other palm. The young prince was caught in a precarious position. The law said that he had to marry. He was too young for such a thing, though, so instead he had to pick a bride-to-be. If he didn’t do that, then his cousin would become king. It might not be a bad thing, but he didn’t want

Chapter 1 - With a yelp, the young man ran across the street. Hands over head, he ducked as the rock whizzed past his head. He knew the other didn’t mean to hit him. If he had, he would be bloody already. Once on the other side, he glanced over his shoulder at the jeering teen. “I’ll get you next time!” With a shiver, the young man shoved his hands into his pockets. He knew it would be true. He glanced over his shoulder again then hurried around the corner. His house wasn’t far away. Happily he skipped up the front steps. His hopes were soon dashed as he fished around in his pocket for his key. His heart

Nartana stared out of a window in the top floor of an apartment building in Central City. In his bedroom was the only quiet place he could escape to. Living with six other siblings made both the main room and the rest of the apartment very noisy. Despite the chaos, they each had a job to do. Shaking his head, Nartana stood from his desk chair and walked out of the door. The top floor had just one apartment. It was a good thing, since the seven siblings ran their business out of their home as well. Lining the east and west side walls were the bedrooms. To the north was a pair of bathrooms on either side of the expansive kitchen. In the cent

It was a day that I would remember for as long as I lived. Before I get to that, though, I have to let you know what went on before. It was near the second year since I’d met Oswald, who I thought might be a relative, and he traveled up to visit me where I lived. We’d visited my town, but my place was too small for both of us, so I rented a small cottage in one of the small villages on the outskirts of where I lived in the country of Everly. He lived in the country that bordered mine to the west, Sharne, which had a very different landscape. It was more desert and meadow while mine was more meadow and forest. Needless to say, des

Act 1 Chapter 1 Staring at her face in the mirror, Viki rubbed her fingertip over the creases at the corner of her eye. “Wrinkles already?” Sighing, she leaned back again. “That’s not going to look good for the cameras...” “Are you ready?” Turning away from the bathroom mirror, Viki called back. “Coming!” “Hurry! The reporters won’t wait.” Pulling open the door, Viki started at Leofric. “I know. I just want to make sure I look okay.” “Fine,” Leofric said, “But punctuality is very important.” Simply nodding, Viki walked int

Act 1 Chapter 1 Walking down the hallway Viki muttered, “Great. I’m left alone with no clue again. I hope this isn’t an April fool’s Day joke.” “What joke?” Viki looked at the one who spoke. Smiling faintly at the other blonde woman, she ran her fingers through her bob haircut. “Nothing. I can’t believe they haven’t come after me.” “I’m a little surprised too.” Lieu tilted her head to the side. Her pale blonde hair fell all the way down her back. Even though the two women were blondes with pale skin, that’s where the similarity ended. Lieu had th

Chapter 1 - These Same Days The year was 986 in the First Age. After the explosion of fights around the country of Givon, everyone involved took a break over the winter. Now it was spring, Rune stood in the little bungalow that had become her favored place to get away from it all. It was an odd choice of placement, since it was the entryway to her land. If anyone wanted to visit, they had to come through that doorway to not be considered an enemy. The black haired woman didn’t let that scare her away. This was her land. Holding a mug of hot cider in her hands, she warmed her fingers from the heat. Her pale gray skin didn’t com

Chapter 2 - Alone no More Winter was harsh. Though Rune wanted to continue her watch over the cloaked figures, she had to take care of herself. Just because she was long lived didn’t mean that she couldn’t get sick. Without her servants around, Rune’s home needed to be cared for by her. It was a large task since her land in the forest city of Mintha covered a substantial amount of ground. The home was made of two buildings: a mansion and a bungalow connected by an open path. At the bare minimum, she needed three people to run the place, though four would be better. Rune finally relented and asked the triplet avatars for

Chapter 1 - Plans with Interesting People With a deep breath taken in, a lone figure stared down from a craggy peak. If I’m really going to live for a long while, I should find a place to settle. I don’t like the idea of being attached to a permanent place, though. It will make me vulnerable... The young woman’s nose wrinkled up. She was older now, but her looks hadn’t aged past nineteen. It had only been two years, though, so she couldn’t expect to look that much different in such a short time. Spread before her, a barren landscape went well over the northern sight. Behind her, a vast mountain range in a hor

When the story was over I chuckled and shook my head. The way the children were held in rapt attention still was amazing. Hopefully, the nature of children wouldn’t be any different in the next generations. My attention went from my musings to watching the flow of people out of the building. I looked like a tree in the middle of a forest of shrubs, so, to avoid being constantly stared at, I waited for the last cluster of adults before I departed. Just as I was passing by the entrance, I noticed a child’s toy. It was just a foot tall. The shape of it was rather like a person, but with a pair of bat-like wings. The color was in spr

Chapter 2 : Hello New World Paul covered his body with an elastic substance like uncultured rubber bands, to mimic human skin. He grew long white strands from his skull to mimic human hair. Paul could not change his eye color so he left it red. The skin wouldn't be enough, so as he reached a waste dumping site he took out a white shirt, jeans, and black sandals. Those Paul put on then headed into the main part of the town. While walking on the street a random person bumped into Paul. He looked up with an expression which could only be fear. A mutter passed the person's lips: "Albino." Paul searched his databanks for that term. Albinos a

Chapter 1 : Crash  The pinging echoes of drones were the only sounds in the silence. Not even the sound of breathing escaped the lips of the figure crouching hidden in the dark. Glowing red eyes, dull even in the darkness, scanned the area for those he knew would follow. He had escaped from stasis in the bowels of the ship. Somehow his consciousness had been split from the One. He had come to be his own being with his own thoughts. In that he was dangerous. The One did not like free speakers or free thinkers. The One wanted control over everything.  So he, the young fugitive, crept over the metallic floors. He tried to keep his own metall

Chapter 2 Days went by without much of a change. While Carine was gone, Dey did little things both inside and outside the house. It wasn't much more than cleaning things. Since it wasn't that late in the spring, she couldn't harvest anything outside the cottage. If there were things she could get, she didn't know about them. Dey had a key to her cottage, but she didn't like to go very far from it. Even though she was on her uncle's land, it wasn't always safe. Some people just went wherever they pleased. Her mother returned late in the week. It had taken longer than she'd expected to visit and talk with her twin. While the journey to the

Chapter 1 - Welcome  The tall youth folded his arms across his chest. Though he'd been told not to, Prince Caladium was wandering out alone from the safe borders of the land his parents owned. As his eyes cast over the landscape to the southwest, he watched the meadow grasses while the wind rushed across them. There were too many people inside the protective ring of trees for his taste. Outside the safe borders it was nice and calm. Up on the northern side it was chaotic. Even from his position he could tell that the migration of people from the towns in the northwest was in full swing. Though people hadn't been allowed to build inside th

Chapter 1 With a sigh, a short brunette cast her green eyes around the room. Though she'd attempted to make the study her own, it didn't feel right to change her teacher's place. It had been four years since she'd taken over as the head matchmaker in Zaltana. What the previous woman had done meant the city's next generation had a chance of being created. On the other side of the duplex, the midwife made sure that they were born. Another sigh left Jyotis Chermona's lips. The month was March, so the matchmaking season would begin as soon as she put the appointment list on her door. From then it would last for around nine months. In November

I was seated in my chair behind my desk when a knock came on the door of the office. The office was at 222 C Ambient Way. It was in the front of the two-room job that served for both work and home. My name is Drag Shergi and I’m a private detective. Detective work isn’t the best paying job so I keep things pretty simple. When I looked at the clock that sat on the corner of my desk, I noticed that it was mid-afternoon on Thursday. When my eyes went up I saw two people. The first was a pretty thing with wavy hair down her back, wide blue eyes, and a delicate young looking face. She couldn’t have made it to twenty. Her outfit wa

March 2014 Update

March 2014 Update

It seems that time has been completely gobbled up again. A lot has happened over the last year. I was in a few accidents that have made things complicated. The worst is with my hands being injured. It's definitely slowed down my work. I was able to publish Under Sandstorm Skies & Law of the Horde last June, though. In the upcoming season I hope to finish then publish The Assassin's Truth, The Doppelganger Princess & Extraordinary Koen. I finished the text and next I'm moving on to the illustrations. I hope everyone else is safe and well!
