Staves Rest - Nearly Lost Egg

Floating out of the boat, far too close to Luna's Descent. Shellyfish rescues one of Smeak's eggs off by the shore. It already feels rather hollow. She isn't sure if there is a staxie in there or some kind of crayon, but she takes it to safety anyway. What would this egg's purpose be?
