Chapter 2 – Initiation
When I was 4 years old, news of a war had already begun to filter down to the slums in which I lived at the time. At that time, my sister, Amy, was drafted to serve the military. She went quietly, as opposed to my parents, who were in outrage and despair. When the military police came to our door to pick her up, my father had grabbed his gun and threatened to shoot the person. She was a girl as well. She didn’t flinch when my father pointed his hunting rifle at her face. I stayed in my room, pretending and wishing to be asleep, even as I watched from my door. I was afraid of what was going to happen, but I stayed quiet so that no one would know I was awake. I would get in trouble if I was up at that hour. It was my sister, who was 16 years old at the time, who stopped him. She said that she would be back in no time. I remember this time very well.
