Howdy Ya'll!
First off, let me apologize deeply. I've been away from Deviant Art for a good solid year and a half now, and by no means was it a planned hiatus. I've been working with a VR firm doing concept art and design, among many other things, and the work came so rapidly and time passed so quickly that I didn't even realize how long I'd been away until I came up for air much later.

A lot of you have been asking about commissions and commenting on my past posts and I thank you guys so much for your continued interest! If I've missed one of you comments or messages PLEASE let me know here and I will do my best to answer. 4,700 people is a lot of responsibility, and I don't take that lightly.

For the moment, I'm not taking on any new commissions, but that doesn't mean I haven't been working on new art. I have been posting a bit on my INSTAGRAM account here: @chadwickjcoleman…
..and I've been working a lot on improving my skills in areas where I thought I may have been lacking before. All of it in hopes that it would allow me to create more and better work for you guys and myself.

I've also been working on my comic book and a few other book projects! I don't want to make any promises just yet, but there will be a lot more to come if I can pull it off. So wish me luck for everyones' sake!

Very best and cheers,
~Chad C.

p.s. I also post quite a bit on my FACEBOOK artist page, so "Like" and "Follow" me there for more updates if you don't see me around DA:…

Birthday thanks!

Journal Entry: Sun May 29, 2016, 10:44 AM

Howdy guys!

So I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has sent me a birthday greeting or well wishes!!!

There were so many of you that sent me a message that I had to realize it was going to take some time to get back to everyone and I am completely humbled, yet again, by the support of this DeviantArt community. I had to send out, at least, a blanket message first just as an acknowledgment to you all. Cannot thank you guys enough.

I've been a bit "MIA" from being on here as much simply because I'm getting more regular work for my actual job...WHICH IS A GOOD THING! :) --but a thing that prevents me from being as active here on DA nonetheless.

SO, there are still some commission requests I haven't gotten to as of yet, and I will definitely try to hit each one of you back individually who have left me a B-Day message! Special shout out to :iconscaryserum: ScarySerum for the extension on my Core membership! Extremely awesome of you, my friend, and here's to more great commission requests!

So again, just wanted to say cheers to you all!!!

Female painting practice +150,000 page views by Chadwick-J-Coleman

Hello peoples!

So I wanted to update you on just a few things here:

1. THANK YOU GUYS SOOOO MUCH for getting me to 150,000 page views! You know I appreciate all of the comments and continued interest in my work (even when it takes a little longer than expected) ;) I try to respond to as many comments (that warrant a response) as I can, but if you’ve commented and I missed it, I apologize! Some of them slip through the cracks.

The piece above is for you to download as a thank you, but I want to do another full body lady as well, when time permits! :)

2. Commission people! Thank all of you for keeping me excited to do pieces for you guys! A lot of these are really interesting and they are continually challenging, each in their own way! At the moment I’m going to take some time to get a few of my other projects going, so I may have less time for commissions, (only a few discussed prior) but if you’ve requested, I have seen your request and just maybe haven’t been able to respond as of yet (I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re being ignored).
Chad's Commission Menu by Chadwick-J-Coleman

3. I’ve recently started posting sketches and WIPS (works in progress) to my Instagram
More of it is the nuts and bolts stuff and less just completed pieces, so if you like that sort of stuff, check me out and follow the page! @chadwickjcoleman

Here is my Facebook Artist page, where I post more than just my own art, but also stuff on comics, videogames (I may or may not be involved in) and animation!…

4. Hopefully I’ll be able to start posting process drawings to my YouTube Channel soon,…

but I’m also trying to get Twitch up and running as well (working out the kinks)!
So SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW ahead of time, so you’re already there and set when the fun begins!

So there’s that!

Thanks again, everyone!

Howdy, you guys!

So, I'd like to say I've finally come to a point with work where I can again focus on only commissions for you guys, HOWEVER, I still have a lot on my plate...BUT, I don't want to keep you guys waiting endlessly, so I figured I may be able to get through a few at a time.

After my non-DA commissions, the list as it stands right now consists of the following names (in no particular order):

:icondenibeast: Denibeast

:iconblakkvi2012: blakkvi2012

:iconkenny-white-lion: Kenny-White-Lion

:iconpigeonwood: PigeonWood

:icondressydung: DressyDung

:icond-wald: D-Wald

:iconlordtiree: lordtiree

:iconlovelykink: lovelykink

..and of course, I will get to the commission requests in the order they were received (I have all of the dates for when you guys requested from me). So, if you'd still like a piece done please let me know here in the comments, so I can better keep track of requests.

If you do NOT see your name on this list and have put in a request to me, PLEASE let me know! I have a lot of information with which to keep up and unfortunately sometimes things slip through the cracks...

You guys are all awesome and THANK YOU FOR BEING PATIENT!!!

very best,

Commissions-vs-Character Design

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 15, 2015, 4:20 PM

Howdy ya'll!

Happy New Year and a prosperous 2015!!! You guys are so awesome, for this reason and more...I have more commission requests now than I have ever had before, and for this I am extremely grateful. However, you should all know that everyone on that list is on hold at the moment because I have a few of my job work projects to complete first.
So no one has been forgotten, if you've sent me a request, although, I will still get to them in the order in which I received them, when I can get to them (hopefully in the next few weeks).

That said, I wanted to let you all know that commissions, for me, are for fun, and I love doing them for you guys! You all have some very innovative characters and I'm honored that you enjoy seeing yours or any fanart characters in this style I've established. I do have to sometimes make distinctions with some as to what qualifies as a "commission piece," for me, and what's actually character design...

The answer is pretty simple (and I'm not speaking to anyone specific on this, just clearing up any confusion). Character design takes a lot more time and research and development than any commission. For commissions I pretty much only do characters that you guys have already designed, both conceptually and visually (just drawn in my style). Or, I will do, what I call, "fan art with a twist," which is established characters also drawn in my style with maybe a "what if" sort of circumstance as far as the concept for the piece.

This is why I charge completely different prices for commissions than I would for a character design, savvy?

At any rate, it's all fun, and I can't wait to see what comes of this next round of commissions for you guys. Again, if you have requested, I haven't forgotten, just been busy! ;)

cheers to you all!

Very late for an important date...

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 2, 2014, 5:52 AM

Howdy, ya'll,

So, I'd like to apologize to anyone who has sent me a commission inquiry or request in the past 2 months or so, as I've been extremely busy with other projects and life happenings and haven't been able to read a lot of them, let alone respond to them (also been just kind of "MIA" here on DA in general)...

I have finished the last round of commissions I was supposed to complete and wanted to take a bit of a breather before I jumped on more (in addition to wanting to complete the actual job work I had on my plate).

I will also get to all of the lovely comments you guys have been leaving on my pieces (which I should actually just thank you for now, while I have your attention) ;)

I will slowly but surely try to get to everyone, and if you think I've missed your message, don't hesitate to bell me here in this journal to call attention to yourself.

As always, requests will be attended to in the order they were received.

Cheers to you all and thanks for being patient!

Commission Season

Journal Entry: Tue May 20, 2014, 5:37 PM

So, since tax season has come and gone and most of my other projects have come to a close (besides my personal projects), it seems that just before the Summer convention season begins, now would be an ideal time to fit in a few commissions!

If you would like one please note me here on DA but please read the commission menu first (carefully!).

Happy Holidays!

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 27, 2013, 12:26 PM
I know not everyone celebrates Christmas during the holidays, but I always have. As a kid it used to be about getting presents, of course, but as I've grown older I enjoy the giving more than the I've been given the gift of artistic creation (even if it's only on paper). I realize I have this gift at my disposal whenever I want to use it. So, it's only fitting that I use my gift to give to others. I wasn't able to buy a lot this year, so I gave my GF a hopefully meaningful piece...Then she blew me out of the water with THIS!!
Adam Hughes Book by Chadwick-J-Coleman

..and the funny thing is, I have Adam Hughes artwork around and about in my "man cave" all the time at any given part of the year but I don't know that she really pays it that much attention she innately picked this treasure up and didn't even realize how much of a "win" it was, only saying "The name sounded familiar.." Ha!

Score m'lady...score.

Cheers to all,

~Chad C.

Here comes a rant:

Speaking on behalf of myself and the majority of my artist friends..DO NOT EVER come to an artist who you expect to do quality work for you and tell them that you are going to pay them on the "back end" if you are not certain that there will be back-end funds. "Back end" pay is supposed to be an additive to the deal, not the entire deal itself.

You would never tell a gardener who is planting a sapling orange tree in your yard and tending to that tree on a daily or weekly basis "We can't pay you for working on the yard and tree right now, but we will pay you 2 years from now when that tree is bigger and we can sell the fruit that is growing from it."

What happens if the tree never produces fruit, or gets knocked down or zapped by lightning somehow..? That gardener just never gets paid… How does the gardener support their everyday needs in the meantime?

I'm explaining it in this way because I don''t think a lot of people get it, and I want you to understand.

For the most part, when an "A-list" Hollywood actor (not comparing us to A-list actors, btw) gets a film deal, that actor is still being paid to be on set everyday or week… In order to sweeten the deal and get them on a project they may have had reservations about doing, the studio or producers will also tack on "back end" pay through dvd sales, or distribution in other forms, etc, as an ADDITIVE…not as the sole means of paying them.

Pay your artists what they deserve at the time you request the work..OR, don't be upset when you don't get what you thought you were going to out of them work-wise and time-wise…

Would you go to your job everyday and give it your all if your employer told you that there's a chance they might be able to pay you next year for the work you're doing now..? No, and neither would most savvy artists.

BTW, also give credit where credit is due...Especially here on Deviantart. Shout out to :iconstephensilver: who sparked the gardener analogy: …

Naked Harley Quinn!?

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 8, 2013, 6:23 PM

The only reason I'm making this a journal entry is because it was an answer to a facebook question posed to me and seemed long enough to warrant a journal entry. That is to say, I usually keep my opinions to myself unless asked specifically.

First, here is what we're discussing:…;

I'll preface with, I don't condone suicide or sexism, but I also operate regularly in constant shades of gray (not black and white). I can see both sides of the argument pretty clearly. On the comic book (and comic creator) side, the contest was seen as no more than just a way to discover new talent written in a way that is common in the industry BECAUSE everyone involved in the creation is on the same page about what is being created and what isn't.

I feel like it may be hard to understand where they're coming from if you don't have a good working knowledge of how things work in the realm of comics and cartoon humor. If you know anything about Harely Quinn the character, you know that she's a bat sh** crazy ex-therapist to the Joker, who actually ends up on the other side of the shrink's couch when she falls in love with the Joker (a sadistic psychopathic killer wrapped up in black humor, laughs, and clown make-up).

In DC's mind they're looking at it in a very "Chuck Jones" Looney Tunes (Wile E. Coyote dying multiple times in a single cartoon) kind of way..and in fact, have Harley break the forth wall and actually address the writers of the book asking in which way they were planning on killing her in the book (in the same way Wile E. might hold up a sign in his cartoons stating to the audience how he's feeling at that particular time).

It's often ridiculous to me how the media loves to take things out of context and blow them way out of proportion. All the internet saw was "naked" "female" "suicide." The last 2 words aren't even in the description but implied.

Now, on the other side of the coin, I do think (and agree with others remarks) that this was a poor choice of a page for DC to choose as a basis for a contest to the public. Comic fans may get the humor, but the general public is not so understanding or forgiving. Without all of the explanation I've given above (aka context) I can definitely see how it could be taken the wrong way.

In my experience, it's often the people who understand the least about what is being discussed that have the most to say about it..for whatever reason. After having read the description I did have the thought though that they may not have thought this one through completely…I draw "scantily clad" women all the time, but I also understand that these pieces are for a specific audience (not everyone).

All in all, there was just a lot more explanation needed on DC's part as to what the description actually meant overall in terms of the character's personality.

Personally, I love the Harley Quinn character (original costume), and I get it DC.

Anime Expo 2013

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 2, 2013, 10:22 PM

So, I will finally make it to Anime Expo this year! Every other year around this time since 2006 I've been in preparation for San Diego Comic Con, so I always miss Anime Expo...but NOT this year! Comic Con is not a must this year, so I'm going to the AX!

There's a lot I want to see there, including new anime titles, artwork (of course), meeting some of the artists behind some of my favorite series and films, games, toys, and last but not least, ridiculous cosplay, hah!

May see you guys there or may not, but I'm sure it will be a bit o' the ol' fun!
