In the original myth, the snake was dripping poison on Loki's face. It was never going to bite anyone, much less Sigyn. Sigyn, as illustrated here, patiently held up a plate to shield Loki from the poison. When the plate filled, she threw the poison away, and the poison which she missed dripped on Loki's face, causing him to squirm in pain. According to Norse myth, this is the cause of earthquakes.
This is a well-drawn piece; the only way it could have been better (or, at least, more faithful to the original myth) was if Loki was drawn too, bound with the entrails of hist children (seriously!) beneath the snake.
