Kopa walked out onto the hot, dry earth of the Savannah desert. The air smelled of animals alive and dead, not unfamiliar to the King's son. His paw brushed against a rock, his eyes lazily following the clean trail it left behind. Not much to do today, he mused, scanning the Pridelands. A few boulders, the family waterhole, an acacia tree or two. And..his eyes shot back to in between the trees. His gaze focused on them, on a light tan furball motionless in the shade. A smile quirked on his lips. His cousin, Vitani. It had been a while since he had seen her, she hadnt come to this area often. While she's here, Kopa thought, I might as well visit. Swiftly Kopa ran down Pride Rock, slowly gaining on her still form. Vitani's ear flicked towards him, and she raised her head, squinting to see him better. "Kopa?" she called out. Kopa slowed to a stop, sitting beside her. "Hey, Vitani, Haven't seen you in a while." Vitani straightened some, "yeah, well... That's what I've been wanting to talk to you about," she said slowly. Confusion entered the male cub's eyes. "Yeah? Why?" The female cub looked down, "Well, Kopa...we might be moving to the Outlands soon," she said.

His ears popped ike a gun. "What? Why?" Vitani sighed. "I don't know. Mother was just talking about how sick she was of being under your dad's control," she said, looking into his deep amber eyes. Her face showed no movement as she watched them widen. "That's crazy! Everyone loves my dad as King! Ask anyone!" he shouted, partly in surprise and in defense of Simba. "You do that. Just don't ask my mom," said Vitani. Kopa sat down, seriousness taking over his voice. "Exactly how fed up is she Vitani?" THe light tan head lowed some as a sigh escaped her. "Pretty darn fed up. With her just coming out of pregnancy I'd say she can't stand much longer. Nuka's no help either. He wants to help her, but to mom he's the biggest screw-up since Simba."

Kopa's heart sank a bit, knowing just how sensitive Nuka was.  He hid it well in front of his mother, he had to; but Kopa was his best friend. He could tell what went on behind those cloudy, dilated eyes of his. "So how is Kovu, anyway?" Vitani grinned a little. "Good. He just opened his eyes about a week ago, and he's teaching himself how to walk. You should see him, Kopa, he looks so cute!" But then a question came to Kopa's mind. "So when did  he happen, again? Scar never said a word about him before."  Vitani nodded, "That's because Kovu's not his. He's someone else' son. Not my dad's." At that second, her voice choked and she bared her teeth in anger. She hated herself for crying, remembering Zira say it was a sign of weakness. As a warrior she had to be strong. But Kopa saw right through that. "Hey, hey...It's okay, Vitani. No one will kill you for crying," he said softly, snuggling up against her.

Vitani buried her face in his shoulder. "Dad was so much fun before he got all obsessed with overtaking the Pridelands," she said hoarsely. "All that meanness in front of Grandfather and Simba,  it was all for them. He was never mean to me or Nuka. He loved us!" Tears wet her fur, and Kopa gingerly licked her cheeks dry. "I know he did. I met him before he died, and I've seen him love you and Zira as much as Dad loves me and Mom. I miss him too. So whenever you miss Scar, at night, when all the stars are out, look for him in the sky. He might even talk to you, if you need him to." Vitani sniffed, skeptical, of course, but she missed her dad too much to pass anything up. "You really think that will work?" she asked, a twinge of hope in her voice. Kopa smiled warmly. "Sure it does! Dad does it with Grandfather all the time. And if my dad can do it, I'm sure you can!" That seemed to cheer her up some. "Thanks, Kopa, that helped me," she said. Kopa nodded, "no problem, Vitani. What are cousins for?" Vitani smiled back and laid her head against him. It was nice to have someone to talk to. Even if it wasn't her mom.
