Child of mankind,
With what expectations
have you come to me?
Do you expect treasure to claim,
Or a dragon’s body to maim?
Do you seek an ally, powerful indeed,
Or a tool to satisfy your greed?
Child of mankind,
What might I expect from you,
Or should I suspect instead?
Might I expect a word that is fair,
Or suspect a tongue twisting a snare?
May I expect honesty in your eyes,
Or suspect but honeyed lies?
Child of mankind,
For whom do you take me,
A daemon vile or a creature free?
I know not what daemons you’ve known,
In your soul’s stirring at night;
Did they have wings like mine,
Or beauty and smiles like Angels?
Child of mankind,
I am a son of Dragonkind,
You wouldn’t know what to expect of me
If I did not invite you in;
You have suspicions I could break like rock,
Or gently melt like ice;
You presume libraries of thoughts on me,
But there’s only one true me.
And so my first question to you,
For all the lore your kind has
