2018.04 sumi ink on handmade Japanese paper, 26 x 37 cm

I attended a #mindfulness retreat in the #PlumVillage tradition and it left a deep impression. I made this hoping it will help me remember to keep going back to the present moment and to dwell in it fully.

An explanation of what's written is on my #etsyshop #onebrightpearl tinyurl.com/inthehereandnow

数カ月前にプラムヴィレッジのマインドフルネスリトリート@福岡を参加させていただき、凄く印象に残りました。私は自ら現在ここに居ることを自分に思い出させるようにこれを描きました。

書かれていることの説明は私のETSYページに有ります、tinyurl.com/inthehereandnow

Overcoming Difficulties
2018.05 sumi ink and gold pigment on 100% kibira hemp cloth. 129cm x 45cm

In #yoga, #tapas is often translated as discipline, but more than that, I am drawn to the idea of it as a burning flame, as a practice that also cultivates the passion and courage to reach for one's greatness. Above is a painting I made on a similar theme, of the passion, courage, and discipline it takes to reach one's goals.

This dragon is depicted racing through the sky, reaching a treasured pearl just above his reach. The shape of the bind is one of a Chinese double coin knot; this knot is one of the most ancient ones used in China and symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and long life. (haha, for me, he is obviously reaching for something beyond that :D)

When was the last time you found yourself with the courage and passion to reach just a little bit more? I'd love to hear about it :)

You can see the different parts of these on my #etsy shop OneBrightPearl

Asian Meets Art Nouveau
2018.02 Japanese pigment and sumi ink on hand-woven hemp (kibira). 130 x 90 cm.

Inspired by a recent trip to France, I put a new twist on the classic #fudog (#komainu, in Japanese) and #peony pairing. I also challenged myself with putting more color in. What do you think? :)

For a closer view of this, please check my #etsy shop #onebrightpearl

Nozoku - 2017 Gensuiten competition piece
2017. Sumi ink on handmade paper from Japan.

size : approximately 90.9 cm by 65.2 cm
approximately 35.8  inches by 25.7  inches

“のぞく”(Eng., “Look”) has been exhibited in the 第56回記念全国公募現水展 (The 56th Commemorative Contemporary Sumi Ink Painting Exhibition) held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, and I've also finally put it up on sale on my Etsy Shop, OneBrightPearl! If you want to see more close-up versions of this, please check out the link below:

This was pretty fun to do, I combined the classic sumi ink techniques with more contemporary resist techniques to bring out the tiger in the bodhi tree. This depicts Shen Xiu, an influential Zen master, catching a glimpse of something while meditating underneath a bodhi tree. Could you take a guess as to what that might be?

For your clue, these are the words written in Japanese calligraphy:

身是菩提樹
心如明鏡台
時時勤払拭
莫使惹塵埃

Approximate English translation:
The body is the bodhi tree
The mind is like a bright mirror's stand.
At all times we must strive to polish it
and must not let dust collect.

What do you think about the message? I'd love to hear your insights on it ;)

Balance - 2016 Gensuiten competition piece
2016. Sumi ink on handmade paper from Japan.
size : approximately 90.9 cm by 65.2 cm
approximately 35.8  inches by 25.7  inches

This was from two years ago, but I have finally put this up for sale on my Etsy shop OneBrightPearl! Here's the link in case you want to check out more pictures of it:

It had been accepted and has been exhibited in the 第55回記念全国公募現水展 (The 55th Commemorative Contemporary Sumi Ink Painting Exhibition) held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

Fu Dogs (also called Chinese guardian lions, or Komainu) are commonly depicted in pairs, symbolizing yin and yang. Fu Dogs are believed to repel evil and ward against harmful spirits, but in this rendition I gave them more of a personality, symbolizing the balance we constantly have to reach within ourselves and with others. Personally, I am more of the left dog (the happy one), what about you? ;)
