clean cut is overrated by catgirl140 clean cut is overrated by catgirl140
It's a proven fact that Blinx looks good in about anything. There's this artwork in Prize 12 (Blinx 1) featuring Blinx wearing a black and white neckerchief, white long sleeved shirt, red checked pants and spiked brackets. He also wears four piercings on his right ear, five on his left and a lip piecing! That's hardcore. (Two piercings on his tail as well but it's not part of this costume. That's a total of 12!) The interesting thing about this costume is the skull on his long sleeve shirt and tom tom boots he wears.

I refer to him as Punk!Blinx, even though he's not punk by any standards. I headcanon that Blinx stopped wearing piercings before Blinx 2 partly cause he grew out of it but mostly cause it drew unwanted attention to him and gave his colleagues the wrong idea about his personality (he's a nice guy!). He wouldn't hesitate to wear them again if given the chance though.

After the initial sketch, I decided to go for the rough sketch art style instead of the thick clean lines I usually do. I think it suits him for the first drawing. I didn't intend for it to be super polished but I like the overall product anyway.

Noxivaga mentioned him to me in the first place a while back so this drawing is dedicated to you. ;)

Always loved this art style.  Does Blinx a ton of justice here, too.  You're certainly right that he can pull off pretty much anything, though - I generally felt that the image this is based off of doesn't look terribly nice, but he certainly works it here.  I never even much cared for piercings, so I have no idea what makes them so good on Blinx.

He may not wear the piercings anymore, but he still can't hide the marks on his ears or tail :u  Seriously, though, can't imagine how he ended up getting something to pierce his tail.  That's basically impaling something.

Disappoints me a tad that you can only have one piercing in BLiNX 2, so you can't really recreate any of the outfits with it, but I also like to amuse myself by imagining that the reason a sweeper can only wear one piercing (and in a specific location) in that game is for some reason involving Blinx and his many piercings at one point.  Either that, or maybe this is just what Blinx is (or used to be) wearing when not in uniform.  Assuming the Sweepers have a "not in uniform," since we seem to get the impression that they spend all their time at the Time Factory.  The inclusion in both games amuses me either way.

Oh, nice use of transparency, too.  Didn't notice that until just now because dA's background is solid black on my browser - I just figured you gave it a black background, not that you made it transparent.

I think the reason he pulls off the piercings so well is because Blinx is cute and cool at the same time, which makes him so likable. Of course in Blinx 2 he leans more on the cool spectrum when he grows up.

Let's hope his fur does a decent job of concealing the holes. :P Wonder what Blinx was thinking when getting the tail piercings. A cat's tail is pretty sensitive and I can't imagine any regular time sweeper getting a tail piecing as easily as an ear piecing.

I can totally roll with Blinx being is the reason there are restrictions on tail piercings. CEO wasn't having any of that bullshit.

I think you're right about that, actually.  What makes me like this drawing so much is that he's really pleasant looking despite the excess of piercings.  He doesn't feel "edgy," at least in the sense of taking himself really seriously - he's just happy looking like that.  I don't think he would pull it off as well in the second game because of his more serious attitude.

Well, to be fair, considering some of the things that humans get pierced, a cat's tail isn't too strange aside from how thick it is.

And damn it, now I imagine the CEO being all stereotypical and denouncing all the young cats and their crazy-looking piercings.  Not that four or more wouldn't be a bit excessive on the job, anyways.

I guess if Blinx wore all those piercings in Blinx 2, it wouldn't be as remarkable as in Blinx 1 and somehow even more excessive on top of his serious persona. It's a shame really. (Then again, you don't play as Blinx sooo...)

On another note I've really wanted to talk about is Versus Mode. I've watched your Versus game that you posted on Youtube recently. What did you think of it?

I think its okay for what it is. Not perfect but a fun experience. Gameplay changes a lot with higher rank members and stronger weapons though.

If it was in BLiNX 2, it would've felt like just another part of the shift that included Blinx's scar, the demonic time monsters, the makeover for the Tom Toms, etc. and would've seemed really gratuitous.  In the first game, it contrasted everything else, which had its own merits.

I'm not sure how my thoughts would vary if I played shorter rounds, since five 5-minute rounds led to min-stat characters maxing out, but I thought it was surprisingly nice.  While I still think that buying a sweeper would be a waste, the weapons you can buy certainly make a difference and the other upgrades (jetpack, barrier, HP) are nice bonuses that actually feel worthwhile.  I haven't tried out the tanks in Vs. Mode, but given how much damage they take to destroy, I get the impression that they'd be overpowered if the opponents didn't also have them.  I'm a bit curious as to how different it'd feel if I was going up against better AI like the A and S ranks purportedly have, but I doubt it'd change much.  They clearly intended to incorporate more features and add more depth to it, but I think it's some simple fun as it is.  I had a lot of fun with it with STom and RKO, and not just because of them being amusing in the process.  Using the space controls was also really satisfying, especially the void trap and black hole, and I wish I could've seen some effective use of time controls to see how much those could alter the fight, too.  The maps could use some serious work aside from the Tom Tom HQ, which I love, since some are ridiculously cramped and others are nice but just too open (Destiny Ruins is too barren, and the Pirates' Graveyard has some really cool features but is way too big and spread out with nothing on the ground).

Oh, I kept forgetting to ask you: what the hell is "laundry index?"

I could go into a lot of detail into Versus mode but I'll write on what's relevant to your videos.

For some reason the game will only allow two NPCs on each team when there are three players and one when there are four. The game can handle 11 NPCs in the Destiny Ruins against Blinx's team so who knows.

You may or may not know this, but you can change team orders by pressing the black button on the controller. I always switch to RECOVER so teammates prioritise using healing items. The disadvantage is that they are more vulnerable if they're recovering HP more often.

A and S ranks are more aggressive with less time between shots (higher SPeed stat?). They're a little smarter than B and C ranks and will collect more points on their own which is incredibly helpful since you can only win by collecting points and may heal more often even when the team order is not RECOVER.

More on the point system. Depending on how many kills someone has (or time they've lasted without dying), they will give a certain number of points upon dying. Points are either 1, 2, 4 and even 6 if they were particularly brutal.

Time Controls are pretty powerful. They affect the whole field and don't require you to aim and throw. Rewind and Pause are the most useful. You can stop the enemy attacking by shrinking them or stopping their shots mid air. Either way, you never get hit unless someone punches you. The main disadvantage to time controls is that they cancel if you take damage so they can be pretty short lived. That's usually the case when using Fast-Forward and Record.

Space Controls are great for instant kills and surprise. Void Trap and Black Hole are the most useful. You can take out an entire team with a void trap if they're bunched together, it's hilarious watching them get swallowed up one at a time. I also use Space Bubble and Quantum Dive to trap the opposing team. The rest aren't so useful imo. The disadvantage is you have to aim and throw Space Controls so you can miss and they aren't global like Time Controls.

Tanks are pretty overpowered but they have a ton of major drawbacks. You can't collect points yourself in a tank so you have to exit the tank to collect the 10 something points you just got. If you run over your teammates, they won't hesitate to shoot the tank. I lost one side of my tread once because my pissed off teammates kept shooting the tank, couldn't even more anymore.

When both teams have a tank you can have tank wars. :)

Oh, Laundry Index indicates how dirty the character is, 0 being the most clean and 100 the dirtiest possible. Why this exist is a mystery if there's already a visible indication.

Man, I always thought to myself that the really big and open arenas like the Pirates' Graveyard would be great for having three or four teams, and then I find out you can only have up to nine characters out at a time.  I can't imagine getting much use out of those maps, then.

I'm very aware of the team commands, though I don't care to use them in a real battle since I'm always getting separated from everyone anyways and I can't really react to whatever's going on with them.  I make use of them in single player where we might get ambushed all at once and then need to work on finding healing items, or I just want my teammates to stand around and do nothing while I take out everyone else on my own.

Didn't know the bit about the AI improving in that many areas, especially healing and picking up points, but I still doubt I'm missing much by not trying them out.  I've noticed the differing point drops, though, and it seemed obvious enough why they varied.

I was wondering what it'd be like if someone got smart about using a record in Vs. mode.  I'm not sure just how useful they could really be, but it sounds interesting enough.  You could certainly overwhelm someone with it, if nothing else.  Rewind's just really funny to me, more than anything.

Before recording the whole session with STom and RKO, I was having some fun with the tanks, actually.  It's surprisingly fun going to the Sky Castle (name is something like that) and having the tank leap from one of the upper levels to the lower level in the centre, crossing a bottomless pit in the process.  Feels really dramatic, looks really stupid, and actually has a bit of an element of surprise if you land on someone, which also feels absolutely ridiculous to do.  And since the tank has ridiculous knockback, it sends them way off the edge, too.

Weird thing about laundry index is that I've never seen it at anything but zero, and it's not like I'm constantly washing my characters.  I suppose that's an answer, at least.

My favourite maps are the Tom Tom HQ and the Time Factory, even if the Time Factory is cramped. I think it would be better game design if full teams of 3 NPCs each were allowed but only in the really large maps.

Aw, I feel the team command RECOVER is really important if you want to win. But I usually play against my brother and we both have equally powerful teams. So RECOVER would only be worth it if everyone has high HP bars.

Yeah, you're right about AI not changing the gameplay very much. It only matters when there's a rank difference in opposing teams.

Record create duplicates of your team so you essentially have double the firepower, which is kind of weird considering the clones are not actually replaying past movements but mimicking the original time sweeper. I'm curious if there's an actual reason behind the effects of time controls changing in battle to missions.

I thought navigating a tank in the Sky Castle (?) was pretty difficult though I guess you can take advantage of the height. The Pirate's graveyard was probably the only world designed to accommodate the tank with it's flat terrain (to fight the ice dragon boss).
Just realised I've never tried having more then two tanks in battle. There's three saves I can use that have tanks so I could try that out. May make the Pirates Graveyard seem less empty with three tanks driving around. I'll get back to you on that.
