Work In Progress

'At dawn, his mother returns with a shield and sword and breastplate, new-minted from still warm bronze. She watches him arm and does not try to speak to him.'

page 324 - The Song of Achilles

Because i adore the book, please read it if you enjoy ancient Greek mythology and heroes. It is in fact, my new favourite, knocking Poppy Z. Brites ' Lost Souls? ' down to second.

This is Thetis, sea nymph and lesser goddess. She also happens to be the mother of Achilles. She also happens to be a bit of a hardcore mum. But again, read it, you'll love it. This is before the little extract above, when i imagine her returning from the ocean with her sons new armour.

I'm actually meeting the author on Wednesday with any luck, so I'm trying to get them all done, but this one is the closest to being down. Stuff will probably change, but im running out of time for now. So keep an open mind if you fancy critiquing it, I've not been at my best for a little while. There's alot to do, particularly on the water.

thoughts, favourites and comments always appreciated :)

have a look at Madeline's site here - [link]

EDIT: with some help from the brilliant David Kawena, i have adjusted and updated the piece, I'm still not happy, but when am I with my work haha!

I know I already asked to use another one of your works, but this one is amazing too! Can I use this piece as well in my project? (Once again, I'd be sure to credit you)

I adore this book, and your representation here of Thetis' eerie beauty is stunning. Her dress and the setting are lovely as well.

I love contrast of dark Thetis in both lighting and mood and brightness of shield and breastplate. She looks so beautiful and threatening at a same time, just like I imagined her. And you really know your way with water - that surge of sea and drops looks so realistic. I hope you will make more fanart for this lovely book 'cos you really bring it to life with your illustrations.

thank you so much :) I would really love to take on some more scenes from the book, but its finding the time and the right piece to do. I wanted to tackle the scene where Achilles fights Scamander and Patroclus' attempted climb f the walls of troy, with Apollo at the top, but who knows, in the future i might get to do it :) thank you so much again!

You're very welcome :) Oh you should really do that, it's a fantastic scene! Painting could be from angle of Patroclus as he climbs, looking up at Apollo who threateningly looks down at him from the wall, with dark cloudy sky above Apollo. But that's my vision, I'm sure that however you decide to do it will be brilliant :D

im really glad you like it, thank you so much. and i got to meet madeline miller and i got to ask her about thetis and it was really inspirational how she spoke about the nyymph and her relationship with her son, it was quite lovely :)

Song of Achilles is an incredable book, however I was rather upset how she portrayed Patroclus, however this is a great piece, you are missing the helmet as well. you should do the scene where Achilles fights the Scamander

Yeah i realised i missed out the helmet and sword on completion when i spoke to her, but i figured she'd look a little clumsy with them all hahah! im really glad you like the piece. and yes, that was one of the pieces i was thinking of doing later on :)
Brickman26's avatar
Awesome, let me know when you have done that one.

This is my favorite book as well! Ahhhh you made my head-image of Thetis into an actual image. Now I can actually picture her clearly. She is a helicopter parent but I still enjoy her as Patroclus' monster-in-law or rather, nymph-in-law.
I love your art!

i adored the character of Thetis too. i got to meet Madeline a few weeks ago and she explained that she thought of her as this truly conflicted parent. does she want her son to die or does she want him to be remembered in glory? especially seeing as she could never go and see him again. its quite tragic. so her anger is always self inflicted and all consuming. especially after what happens with Pyrhrus, its really quite tragic :( I'm really glad another fan thinks ive done her credit :) thank you so much :)
