Shadowscape was born in a tiny, salt of the earth earth pony village where even unicorn magic was shunned. When his magic began to manifest as a child, he was sternly told to suppress it or never return home. He managed to keep his unusual powers under wraps until a particularly intense thunderstorm startled the teenage Shadowscape so badly he accidentally blasted the family barn apart. He was promptly cast out of his home and told to only return if he could be "fixed". Filled with an overwhelming anger, sadness and guilt for what he was, Shadowscape initially planned his revenge. Maybe he could curse their crops or turn their water supply into honey. But the more he thought about it, the more he just wanted to walk away. And so he did, turning his back on all he knew to travel Equestria in search of a new home. Shadowscape would meet many ponies along his travels and learn something new from each one of them, as well as learn about himself. He pushed his darker feelings down, feeling shame and guilt for ever feeling them, but eventually made the choice to not only face his darkness but work to accept and embrace it. At that moment, his cutie mark, late as it was, finally appeared: a black horse's head.

Shadowscape is a quiet sort, not out of shyness but because he feels what you don't say is more important. His presence carries the intensity of pitch-black darkness, still and consuming yet melancholic. He's a listener, observer and, at times, a mirror letting others interpret what they see reflected. Under the cool inky black surface is a mind that never stops. Shadowscape is a deeply introspective and pensive pony and will internally agonize over choices he made days or even weeks ago. He possesses a profound but passive compassion for others, never simply handing them a single correct answer but allowing them to find their own way. While he's eager to help others, he has difficulty accepting help himself, facing his own troubles silently and internally. Accounts of him vary, from "standoffish creep" and "sadistic bully" to "gentle advisor" and "supportive friend". Shadowscape, despite being an earth pony, possesses the ability to use magic. Without a horn or equivalent magical focus, he lacks the ability to perform more precise spells and his magical dexterity is poor. Some ponies believe he's an affront to nature and others want him to show them how to do what he does. Shadowscape answers simply, "Know thyself."
