The stallion followed her into the barn like a dream. He'd behaved himself since the moment they met. If everything went as planned, he would be stabled with Ever, Once, and the rest of the more docile stallions. Until she got a better idea of his temperament, however, he would be stabled in the smaller barn with Camille, another of their new arrivals.
The lights flickered as they approached the stallion's new stall. Frowning, she shouted down the aisle. "Jerico?" There was no answer, so she tried again. "JERICO?"
There was a shout from the loft above. "Nicky?"
"What's wrong with the lights?"
"Probably mice chewing on the wires. Told you we needed a barn cat."
Nicky rolled her eyes as he started to list the reasons why they didn't need a cat. His blonde head poked out of the loft and he broke off abruptly.
"Is that the new stallion?"
Nicky gestured proudly at the horse. "This is Eclipse!"
Jerico stood beside her in an instant. Looking at the stallion's lion-like tail, he grinned. "He and Once are going to make quite the duo."
"They are!" Even as she agreed, though, her smile faded.
"I...it's nothing. Just, the people at his old barn seemed almost glad to be rid of him."
"They're probably just happy to see him going home."
"Yeah, I guess." She looked upwards. "The lights in that barn were flickering too."
"That's odd." Jerico reached out to pet the stallion. Instantly, he withdrew his hand.
"What? Did he nip you?"
"No!" Jerico shook his hand. "What were you doing, rubbing balloons on him? He's all full of static!"
Nicky couldn't help it, she laughed. "He shocked me too, when I first pet him." Her laughter trailed off when she saw the look on Jerico's face. "What?"
"I heard something recently about Padros..." He shook his head, waving a hand. "Never mind. It's probably nothing."
Stepping aside, he gestured into the stall. "Should we get him settled?"
Nicky woke suddenly from a deep sleep. At first, she didn't know why. Then she heard the thunder again.
She knew their older residents were okay. It wasn't supposed to storm tonight. She would have stayed with Eclipse.
Grabbing her rain jacket, she threw it over her pajamas and stood uncertainly in the doorway. There was no rain, only rolls of thunder and fantastic bolts of lightning that split the sky.
She didn't like lightning. Her mouth felt dry at the sight of it and her muscles felt paralyzed.
Another boom of thunder snapped her out of her trance. Before she could change her mind, she raced for the barn.
And reached it to find Jerico already standing at Eclipse's stall.
"Nicky." He waved her over. "You have to see this."
Still trying to stop her heart from racing, she moved to stand beside him.
What she saw made her heart stop all over again.
Eclipse paced the back of his stall, tail flicking, the little lights on his neck glowing bright as the lightning outside. What caught her attention, though, were the little sparks of lightning dancing along his speckling, around his hooves, and up his legs.
Slowly, Nicky turned to Jerico. "So...what was it you heard about Padros?"

Couldn't wait to draw this boy. Thought it would be fun to try out the ability system with him too.
