Farside3-2013

The cartoon pretty well sums up what happened. I found a bunch of The Far Side books at the Hilo library. After reading them all, I drew a cartoon about homes on a range (stove) based on the Kansas state anthem I sang in school while we lived in Fort Leavenworth. After I drew it, I realized with utter horror that I had been influenced by the books I had just read (what can I say, I draw ideas from experience, so the topics of my cartoons are easily influenced). There were also some other cartoon ideas that I drew but never inked. I don't mind reading them, but The Far Side humor is generally not the type of humor I strive for in my cartoons. I read in an article online interviewing Gary Larson that he accepts and reads fan mail (he doesn't receive a lot), so I decided to write a letter and include my drawing and Gospel tract that I made. I made this a priority because I procrastinated asking the illustrator that lived at the end of my street to sign his book that I bought and he passed away. I was pretty upset. So I try not to procrastinate in areas like this now. I never did hear back from him or even get a form letter, so I have no idea what happened. At least Charles Schultz sent me a form letter when I mailed him my drawing after announcing his retirement (no, I'm not bitter).
