Got reacquainted with my dear old markers this spring break! It's been such a long time since I had the time to sit down and use them that I couldn't even recall the names/numbers of the colors orz;; Traditional art is long and tedious, but there's nothing like ink all over your hands and getting a faceful of ethanol fumes every few minutes

I've been marathoning my old Ghibli movies, and was reminded of how much I loved them from childhood until now. Howl's Moving Castle will always be one of my favorites! I am very thankful for Miyazaki for bringing a little more magic to this world with his films ;v;

Will be selling prints of this at Fanime (San Jose) and Anime Expo (LA) 2012!
There are also some WIP shots posted in my tumblr if anyone is interested!

Amazing job, I love the colours you use, to make everything shine, i also adore how you included so much from the movie like the moving signs in the background and howls earring on Sophie, also the lights and there are so many details I cant imagine how long this took you. Amazing job.
Also the textures you used with the clothing is surreal, Howls cape/jacket has the rounded checkers on it , gives it depth, making it look 3D.
The softer parts of this picture give contrast to the sharper harder objects, like the jewels on his belt, and the rounded glowing lights. The only way i could think of improving this picture would be to add Calcifer, but then again a lot of people did that and that's just one of the things that makes this picture stand out a little bit more. Excellent Job.

This movie and couple is one of my absolute favorite. The way you took two characters together and make them fit perfectly together makes me amazed at how you did this.

To begin with i love ALL of your work. So this made me love it even more. You inspire me so much. every time i see one of you amazing art works, i want to draw just exactly like you.

In this picture i have no word of falseness, it is truly genuine. Absolutely beautiful! Colors in all. I absolutely love Howls Moving Castle, i have watched i 3-4 times, this just makes me want to watch it again! I have never love a piece of art this much!

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite Miyazaki films as well, and your drawing does the art work from the movie justice. It captures the essence of the film, but it is completely your own. A beautiful piece of art, though I do wish you could have filled the white space in the background. The empty space does not bother me because your art work is already very beautiful, but i think it could have enhanced the beauty just a tad bit more. Thank you for taking time to do this over your spring break. It has made mine all the more special. ^____________^

When I first saw this without even looking at the description i knew it was howls moving castle. I love this its unique and its bold and crazy in a good way. I feel like you could have done more with the back round because to me it seems a little empty (mostly the top part everything else was filled). But my favorite thing about this picture is that you really can tell what this is if you gave this to any miyazaki fan they would know instantly what this was and who it was. I also thought that you could maybe add some other characters in the back round maybe. Overall I really loved the picture

Id like to say firsthand, that the artist does a great job showing that with all that's going on around them, Howl`s focused on her ,shes his world. The soft lighting is balanced out delicately by the Bright yellows and light blues. Another statuesque trait is how Howls dark hair contrasts his background, and Sophie's light hair contrasts her own.The lines are defined enough, but not bold;the colors are shaded smoothly. With the way the hair and cloths suspended in their directions shows that their off the ground. Seem like this could be in a artbook contribution to Hayao Miyazaki. Wonderful job, and please make more art.

It looks a little bit too edgy or sharp, if you know what I mean. Also, you should work on the closed eyes on the guy a little bit more. Maybe it's just not my style of drawings I like, but your other drawings seemed much better.

Overall, it looks amazing. The design and creativity you have! The hands, hair, and eyes on the girl is perfect. Also, the clothes looks realistic. The sparks of the water give a nice touch to the artwork, without it it would be a little plain. It is very original! Keep up the great work.

First of all, I'm really captivated by this piece. It is one of the best "Howl's Moving Castle" fanarts I have seen to date and definitely worth all the hard work you've put into it.

What really makes this piece extraordinary is the element of movement created by the falling stars that surround Sophie and Howl.

All I'd suggest is a variation of value from the background to the foreground. To be honest, when I first looked at this I could not find Howl's arms.

Overall, I'd definitely call this a masterpiece and buy it at Fanime if I could.

Let me approach this based upon my Positive and Negative opinions, regarding on this one. I'll start off on the positive side.

once more, i can easily determine the original style of your works. considering me one of your biggest fans, from what i really like on this one same as from your other artworks is the tiny detailed pieces. The folds, the wrinkles, even the tiniest details from the clothes. you know what i mean. from the clothes down to the hairs, the way you draw the hair, it looks simple, yet very elegant and complicated.

other thing is the colors. If you can draw even the tiniest ones in detail, you can color them real nice. the hands, the arms and the concept are nice also, the proportions i say might not be really corporate, but it appears to be fine.

Ok down to the negative part.

first of all, to me this one looks a little rushed. not only from the lack of designs at the top part, also the color. i can't help the feeling that there's something missing. comparing this from the your other works, i say your skills might have dropped, not that bad. must be the tough schedule eh?

maybe it's just me noticing these negative aspects of this artwork of yours, or is this really part of this one's concept. well that's what i want to point out. no offense. one other thing, what i noticed from your artworks. your not really good at drawing characters from different perspective eh? what only gives impact on your artworks is the details. as i said, this one looks a little incomplete. If you completely draw in the same perspective pattern, someday you'll ran out of ideas and will be stuck on the same positions. such as standing up, or sitting and mainly flat and blank. I'm not one to talk since i not as good as you. art really is my passion, rather than making art, i love seeing art. so yeah.

i still respect you though, i don't attempt on insulting you or whatsoever, this is just plain criticism, and i'm just stating something that might help and improve your skills better. it's still your choice if you want to consider them or not. I'm just sayin'

anyways, overall : FAIR.

for this one. to me.

That's what i think.

good day and godbless. keep up the good work, and i hope for your improvement as i watch your works grow.

The piece is very well lid out and the composition is rather excellent if you ask me. In a positive aspect, I think the over all image is very well colored and executed, and really exemplifies your clean lines, and ability to add texture. For example, Howl's coat looks so plush I could just nap on it forever haha.
The only thing I think that you could work on is perhaps creating more focus on your subject. Sophie tends to loose some importance as you look, and maybe adding more color and accents to her would make it pop more.
But you're art is always amazing so I wouldnt take all the critiques too seriously <3

I myself don't believe that the negative space is such an issue in this piece since there is plenty of other details added to make the art more lively. There are many ways of making art and no piece is at all perfect because there is no such thing as perfect art. It is all different and unique in it's own way and I think you displayed great depth but not too much to lead away from the main characters.
The lines are very fine and good and your style is of course something to be amazed at. I'm looking forward to more of your art.
But if there is something you would like to work on then I would say that you should use more depth in your coloring to make the image pop even more. This image feels more serene so the colors shouldn't be too bright and they are more light and peaceful. You did fantastic! Great job!

To me, what gave the image power was not just its creativity or the 'movement' that it has, but the small moment of the feathers and the scales being peeled off his face. Even if someone had never seen this movie before, they could look at this and understand the magic behind it.

The colors are good, and it's cool you have apparent negative space, however I think it'd be nice if the top background wasn't just a solid color. Maybe if it had a mix of the same color, but darker and lighter parts to it than just solid, just like the dark blue below it.

Overall, really well done piece. There's a bunch to look at everywhere you look :]

This is one of the best traditional pieces of work I have seen. It is so detailed and I just think that it captures the essence of the movie. I keep expecting it to move.

Although I love all of this, My favorite part is how Howl's jacket divides the background without it looking unnatural or out of place.

Also, I admire your use of negative space since, although it is an important part of art, it is more often than not forgotten.

I hope I didn't come of as too praising, but you should be very proud of this.

If it's possible, try pushing even more for a higher contrast for the things that you want to stand out and the things that can fade towards the back. Darkening the dark blue color under the coat to somewhere around 70%-80% and darkening the white in the woman's dress with a 20% grey marker so they don't stand out as much while pushing for stronger contrasts in the woman's hair and blouse (is it a blouse,) and skin. I think you had a good thing with the guy with the stronger reds in the lapel of his jacket and the greys in his shirt with the pure white areas limited to the forearm wrapping around the woman.

I hope this helps.

The composition of this piece could be improved by filling in the negative space, but otherwise the colors and poses flow together with perfect balance. However the anatomy is very stiff, interfering with the atmosphere and natural feel otherwise conveyed.

Technique-wise, there are no problems. The lines and colors are flawless and polished. More contrast and perhaps a light source or glowing effects would be an improvement though.

Overall this is spectacular in a way that is to be expected from you, but nothing new or groundbreaking. Your best art seems to be made when branching out, so don't be afraid to experiment!

the only thing, actually, would to have something in that one area in the background, (like more feathers) it does look pretty empty. besides that, i love it and want to see more of your work!

I really love this piece. Everything in this piece is stunning, just like how the movie portrayed them. I love the line art so much and I like how you used the sparks as lines to direct our attention back to Howl and Sophie. I personally think the background is perfect. The background makes our eyes rest on Howl and Sophie.

Your color choices are wonderful too. Howl's jacket has so much detail and it looks just like it should. I love how you colored the ends of Sophie's hair and how you drew part of Howl's face as his bird-self. Great attention to detail with Howl's belt. This piece appears simple but is full of amazing details. The only thing I would actually suggest is maybe adding the light source to the sparks. That would bring a lot more colors in. This is so stunning. Wonderfully done!

Vision:

Vibrant colors are used well and draw me to the most important parts of the piece.

Originality:
Well, Hayao Miyazaki is the owner of the characters.
The angle, placement, and pose are fabulous.
Very unique.
Kind of scrolling back to CoffeeSugar's critique,
I agree on how you should fill in the white blank space.
It's hard, though.

Technique:
Just wonderful.
Values are shown well,
and the choice of hue is great.
Keep it up!

I am a HUGE fan of the Ghibli films and animations!! So naturally I love Howls Moving Castle. This is an amazing view on the love between Howl and Sophie . I absolutely love it! Just so you know, I'm going to be super knit picky when critiquing this.

I would have liked to have some sort of background to fill the white space just to have a setting and story with the picture. For example where are they together? It makes me a little curious.
But I do know that doing this is very difficult and takes time. I probably would never be able to do it XD.

I find that your technique is impeccable! I cant find a detail that needs work!

The only reason why the originality is 4 stars is because I found similar pictures. But none had this kind of pose so it has an original kind of feeling.

Overall I feel like you did an awesome job! I hope to see more and more

Originality: Well, since this is from Howl's moving castle, it's not really original however the way you presented this in your own different idea completely changes the originality of this piece. Superior!

Brilliant! Wonderful use of colors and the texture on Howl's cloak is fantastic. The detail on his belt/shash is exquisite. You can tell that you spent a lot of time on this piece. I would have done something with the background on the upper half of the picture. (Above Howl's cloak) I also really enjoyed the flow of the fabrics due to the invisible wind and the small feathers added into Howl's hair. I think that was a great little detail. The little fireworks also look great but I would have done more colors than just blue, some had a rainbow effect in the movie which might have a looked better. Overall, a brilliant picture!

This is... I'm not actually sure where to begin with this. I loved this the second I saw it, and it felt like a good time to post a critique, my first one, in all honesty. With that said, I'd like it to be a warning that I am not exceptionally experienced with critiquing. Coupled with the fact that I am not a professional artist, I'm not sure how valuable my feedback is, but I will strive to do my best.

Vision: I like the general theme of the piece, it's exceptionally warm and vibrant, and that helps with the general feel of it. I don't really have much to say for this specific category, to be frank, but I love the theme of the work.

Originality: This is a bit of a tough call for me. I don't like giving perfect ratings for anything, since to me, it feels similar to sucking up. Conversely, I don't want to just take points off for absolutely nothing, as that would be unfair as well. So this is my only minor nitpick. As fantastic a piece as it is, Miyazaki fanart is very widespread, so in terms of genre it feels the tiniest bit stale. As far as the genre goes though, this certainly stands out among the crowd, so it still retains a very high rating. This is how fanart should be done.

Technique: Not to belittle digital artists (dabbling in it myself) at all, but in terms of technique I hold traditional pieces in higher regard. It's that extra human touch added in, and it's clear that a lot of time, effort, and care went into this particular piece. Especially impressive to myself is the shading using copics.

Impact: Like I said before, this enchanted me from the moment I saw it. Everything flows together nicely, at least to me, and that helps the presentation. The colours are diverse enough that they draw attention to every area of the picture, but not so distracting that they force you to stare at them. Overall it's a pleasure to look at this piece, wherever your eyes fall.

Hopefully this was helpful; it's entirely possible that it was a bunch of unhelpful praise, but it's my honest opinion that this is an exemplary piece of art. Take this how you will, and thanks for giving me the oppourtunity to critique!
