Copic Marker Tutorial I by cartoongirl7 Copic Marker Tutorial I by cartoongirl7

:bulletred: FINISHED PRODUCT: [link]:bulletred:
(Scroll to the right half.)
Maybe one day when I'm crazy enough, I'll make a tutorial on the left half of that picture.

:bulletred:Copic Tutorial II: [link]

HOLY FREAK THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG. I thought I'd take a nice, relaxing break from my chaotic Anime Expo preparations and have a go at my first tutorial, but nooooooo...this thing is more stressful than an actual drawing.

But seeing that I'm a PS newbie, I'm pretty glad that I was able to at least compile all this together. I guess I picked up some bits of Photoshop knowledge over the year after all. Would be sad if I didn't.

People have been asking me to do a tutorial for a long time now, and I apologize for taking next to forever to get around to it ^^; The thought of making a tutorial always intimidated me since I have like 234012938 WIP pictures to choose from. But I finally got it done :evillaugh:

Compressing 15 painful hours of sweat, cursing, and flinging objects into a 670×7637 pixel tutorial is no easy task. I'm kind of sad that I had to cut like 30 pictures (about 8 steps) off from the walk through. The thing is flippin' ginormous as it is, so I couldn't make it even larger D: And excuse my random doodles. I went a little nuts on the commentary too -_-;;

This is a thank-you gift for all of my watchers and friends online, and hopefully it'll be of some use to those of you who are starting out with markers :>

:bulletred: "Where do you get those markers? How much are they?!"
You can get Copics at local art stores (if you're lucky), and definitely online. Aside from a Japanese bookstore I go to, Kinokuniya, I also order them from online at [link]. THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. They can cost from $4.50 to $6.50 each, so shop smart :>

:bulletred: "What paper do you use?"
Manga manuscript, A4 size; I prefer Copic and Manga University brand. You can find these online too.

:bulletred: "How did you learn to draw like this?"
Lots of trial and error and lots of practice.

Um...holy crap. Another DD?! I never even dreamed of getting the first one. Thank you =AdigunPolack for your suggestion and kind words, and ^znow-white for featuring it! I appreciate it very much!

The thing that I especially love about Copic Marker Tutorial by =cartoongirl7 is that it not only shows us such truly clever tools and tricks of the trade in creating such amazing and anime-based works but also personally shares with us from the heart her own sheer joys and hardships in using Copic Markers to paint with, which is something that many of us can well relate to. The illustrations and pictures are just utterly fascinating and so splendidly informative as she teaches you step-by-step while guiding you through the complications of drawing with Copic Markers, especially if you are a beginner!! I seriously love the hidden bits of wit and humor in this piece, just to keep things really fun without even boring the viewer. What a sparkling piece of pure gold here on deviantART where tutorials are concerned for sure! This was really helpful. I'm new to copics and nice markers similar to them, since I got a set from my BFF for Christmas, but for the most part, I didn't know how to go about using them. 8D; I used what knowledge I've gathered over the years as far as colouring goes (starting light and shading gradually and other such things) but markers are totally different. 8D;; Thank you so very much for sharing this information and being detailed in what you do. I never would've thought of colouring over the shaded areas again with the base colour to help blend the colours better. o_o That's DEFININTELY going to come in handy. 8D; Haha Thanks again!

Oh my gosh! Thanks for the link to the copics! They are 7+ dollars for me to buy at the local art store, so this will allow me to buy more for less! Awesome tutorial too!

I have personally been using Copic Markers (and Copic Ciao) for about a year and a half now, as well as some Sakura Micron ink pens for about the same time frame. Even though I am quite familiar with them, this walk through/tutorial actually gave me a few small tips -like the one about inking pens; I personally haven't had a problem, but there is no reason why I shouldn't follow it!- so thank you very much!

This was really helpful, but I only have like… 74 copic markers… and I can relate to crinkling the paper, my first 20+ pictures were all crinkled XD though back then none of them were any good XD

Can you use the same technique with other color pen, like color pen  bought from Daiso store for instance?
ChristopherGonzales Featured By Owner Feb 3, 2014  Student Traditional Artist
Most likely not, most markers behave differently, especially copics

This is great. :D I just got some copics, and they were all smeary. This should help a lot. ^^
Wondering if you can help me with my paranoia though.
How long do your markers last? Do they empty after a few pictures, or do they last for many? Thanks.

Hi-- just wondering-- I've let my inks dry for 15 minutes and still get smudging, using the same marker/pen combo as you-- do you have any idea what I could do differently? I'd really appreciate some guidance-- this stuff ruins my con sketches. :(
