Sun, Stone, Moon, and Death by caroro Sun, Stone, Moon, and Death by caroro
The raven is my favorite bird, and while it is usually considered a symbol of death and ill omens, I have found that the raven in cultural and religious stories has done more good than bad.

Some examples of the good the raven has done:
:bulletblack: In North American mythology, the raven created the world we live in when he carried a stone until tired, when he dropped it and created land when the stone fell into the ocean and expanded;
:bulletblack: In North American mythology, the white raven brought the Sun, Moon, Stars, Fresh Water, and Fire to the world when he stole them from the greedy gray eagle and dispersed them throughout the world. The smoke from the fire brand he held in his beak made his solid black;
:bulletblack: In North American mythology, the raven brought light into the world. The Great Spirit had given all the animals in the world a box to open. When the animals opened the boxes all the things that comprise the world came into being. All the animals had opened their boxes, except the seagull, who's box contained the light of the world. The raven stuck a thorn in the gull's foot until he dropped the box, and out came the sun, moon, stars, and thus the first day began;

Of course, these are only a few stories of the good the raven has done. The raven has also done wrong, but I think its good is worth much more than its wrong.

So, this is a tribute to the raven, one of the most misunderstood yet most beautiful animals.

That is a gorgeous piece. My full name is Raven Jezzannah (a goddess of the moon) Sundancer Grabowski. I am also a Libra, which represents balance, yen and yang, dark and light. As does the raven. I've read that the raven is the void, the messenger between the realms of life and death. Raven's are by far my favorite animal, I thank you for the tribute.

We have huge ravens up at school in New York :)

Love this--the style and shading is great. It has a very mysterious atmosphere, and I think I'm going to go read Edgar Allen Poe now :D

The raven is most interesting birds to me, not only because of the ancestral beliefs( for exemple, one you didn't talk about: in the scandinavian mythology, Odin/Wotan had two ravens that he sends flying over the world. And every day they tells him what's happening, if everything's alright :)), but also because of their social life.
I love this drawing of yours, nice detailed and concept/idea :love:

I LOVE ravens. And yes, definitely a misunderstood animal in most folklore. You certainly did them justice here though! <3

There's another story I'm thinking about of a certain castle in England, where ravens were said to be good luck and if there were no ravens left, the kingdom would perish.
