Eleventh Doctor by Carnivius Eleventh Doctor by Carnivius
My friend Schu had already done the 11th Doc in his red tie look but after doing the 'Raggedy' Doctor a while back I wanted to have a go at the tweed jacket look too so did the blue tie/shirt variant here and with his sonic screwdriver (ok it looks a bit like the PlayStation Move controller there I think, hehe). Ok so that means Matt Smith now has THREE sprites on our gallery page thing but that's ok since he's the man of the moment as it were.

Might tweak this a lil more but overall I'm quite happy with it. Expect Amy Pond to get another sprite soon too to go with this sprite.

Just noticed I have done this on the 6th anniversary of me joining this site =)

All the sprites together are shown on the blue background color at [link] or at my site's own gallery page for it along with sprites by my friend Schu at [link]

Doctor Who is property of the BBC

After looking through Dorkly's vids I just noticed...
did he use this sprite in the "Chrono Trigger Time Travel Mix-Up" video? :o

Just watched it and thought that it looked like your rendition of the doctor.

Don't know what dorkly is but that sounds like the video I saw a little while ago and yes they've used my Eleventh Doctor sprite. Was quite neat to see it somewhat animated.

Yeah dorkly mainly chops up sprites in segments and uses variations of each limb in order to make some rather neat animations.

And yeah, in that one it seems your eleventh doctor sprite was used,
must've made quite a few edits though considering the amount of movement he got out of it :)

Yeah, I don't mind people doing that for non-profit stuff though would have been nice to be contacted (can't remember if they credited me for it or not) just so I could have seen it sooner rather than just stumble onto it one time.

Couldn't find any credit towards you at least,
but the style gave it away for me :P

I really like your various sprites, and as Matt Smith has taken the place on my favorites Doctor list as number 1, i did him in Minecraft pixel art, and used your pictures as a model. hope this is okay, see the pic here: [link]

It's cool. Just strange seeing my lil sprites turn up in all sorts of places. Like as appearing in youtube videos or as perler beads or in this case some video game. Surreal but cool.

Fantastic work Amon. Matt Smith is almost as good a Doctor as David Tennant... almost. >_>

Personally I've liked Smith a lot, lot more. He just seems more.. Doctor-y. I liked Tennant a lot but he did seem too 'cool'. I like an odd Doctor =p

Meh, I like Smith a lot, but Tennant just felt more genuine to me. He really captured the Tenth Doctor's personality, and portrayed it extremely well. I adore quirkiness, but to me Ten (from a writing standpoint), just felt to me to be (more or less) a human with superpowers, and Tennant really seemed to capture that perfectly.

I'll use Nine as an example. Although Christopher Eccelston did a fantastic job acting as the Doctor, it all felt like acting. As hard as he was reading the lines on that sheet of paper, that was still all it was. With Tennant, most of the time it honestly felt like it was him speaking, and him reacting to the situation. Matt Smith feels a bit more like Eccelston to me than Tennant. A great guy whose reading the lines really well, but he's still reading them.

Then again, I'll be the first to admit that I have a huge crush on David Tennant, so you should probably take my opinion with a grain of salt. :P Besides, I honestly didn't like Matt that much at first, but he grew on me really fast. So, I should probably give him another season or so before I start comparing him to Tennant (who had 3 seasons to work with).

oh ok. I liked Eccleston more than Tennant though =p I think my main problem with the tenth doctor is that he's too cool and he knows he's cool and attractive and all that and I found him much to hard to relate to whereas a quirky outsider who just doesn't get normal human social interaction that well like the Eleventh Doctor is something I totally feel all the time so maybe that's why I like him more. Well that and I just find Smith's mannerisms and the way he delivers a lot of his lines very mesmorising. I liked the Tenth a lot but there were times I wanted him to just calm down and stop the over-acting he tended to do from time to time (I think that's from Tennant being a shakesperian-type actor, they ALL do that).

Smith is among my 3 absolute fave Doctors of all time and that was only after a few episodes. Now if they could reintroduce the Master and have him regenerated and played by someone who knows something about how the Master should be (not a laughing hyperactive loon like the godawful version John Simm played) then I'd be really happy. Plus he needs an evil beard again. Best villains need evil beards.

Hey, I'm not taking anything away from Eccleston. The man is a solid actor, and he did an amazing job as The Doctor. His acting in "Dalek" is one of the best Doctor performances I had actually ever seen. However, the main thing that makes me like Tennant more, is that it really didn't feel like Eccleston had anything unique about him. He was a guy, playing the Doctor, who did it really well. He was cheery at the right times, angry at the right times, and stoic at the right times. Whereas with Tennant, there was so much emotional dissonance that it just blew me away. He seemed to have this facade of utter childishness, that really bizarrely meshed into his colossal amount of knowledge.

And honestly, it really didn't feel like Tennant fit in with humans that well either. Better than Smith, certainly, but there still seemed to be a good chunk of the time where he was just a kid, in an adult body, with adult knowledge. And there is a massive disconnect there, in my opinion, that really set him apart.

As somebody who is hardly a very typical member of the human community, I can completely see where you're coming from with Smith, and I agree that that is a part of his performance that is quite captivating. However, as noted, I saw that with Ten sometimes too, on perhaps a more subtle level.

I suppose the only real disagreement I have with anything you just said is that I just can't separate David's overacting, and just Ten's general demeanor. The character himself just seems to be so childish, as I said, and his overreactions just seemed to tie in with his character perfectly.

As for Smith, I love the guy now. I suppose that my disturbing crush on Tennant is the only reason I had to take my time and get used to Smith, and realize that he was going to do something a little different with the role. When I realized that though, I more or less loved what he did immediately. It is a bit different from Christoper and David, but it's definitely compelling.

(DISCLAIMER: I want it to be clear that I love all 3 new doctors, and really, most of the doctors. They all did/are doing a fantastic job in their own way, and I can understand if it felt like I was slamming 9/11, which was REALLY not my intention.)

This is clever stuff. Have you done a tutorial on how you do this? Not that I'll try, it'd just be genius to see :)

I can't do tutorials. I'm terrible at explaining stuff and it would suggest there's nice tidy system to doing these. Not when I do them, there's a looot of trial and error and tweaking and re-tweaking and leaving half-finished sprites alone for months before it hits me how to do them properly =p

That's a shame. Though maybe you'll join those ranks of people who film themselves doing them for youtube :P

I love the retro thing and have been considering a Dr Who game in this style and pondered where to start! But after this overexposure of games right now, I doubt anyone would play it!

Looking forward to more of your stuff thoguh!

To be honest I just don't believe in tutorials for arty stuff. Never have done and never used them myself either. It should be down to practice and experimentation. More fun that way and you find your own style and technique that suits you most comfortably.
