Chasing thoughts

The cat sat on the rug, minding its own business, when something small and wet poked against its paw, disturbing its sleep.  The cat peered over at the disturbance.  A little white mouse was trying desperately, and in vain, to shove itself beneath the cats' paw.

"Ahem."  The cat stretched, and sat upon it's haunches.  The mouse did not move.  It sat there before this great beast, as a man might before a god, and just sat there, staring into eyes the size of its head.  "You're not scared?"

"No, I am not.  I am sad."  It was hard to tell if a mouse was sad, as much as it was hard to tell if a cat was sitting in your lap because it loved you, or because it was simply warm.

"Oh.  Dear.  Whatever is wrong?"

"Kill me."  The little mouse scurried forwards towards the cats right paw, which it pulled away in equal elements of disgust and suprise.

"What on earth are you doing?  Are you mad?"

"Kill me please.  I'm going to die anyway.  Just kill me now and get it over with."

The cat stared at the mouse curiously, and placed its paw on the mouses back softly, once, twice. Pat-pat.

"There, there."  It said in its most sympathetic voice.   "You're just depressed."

"It's hopeless.  It's all so hopeless and I cannot stand it.  Cannot stand it anymore.  Wondering, waiting.  Scurring about the floor, running and hiding from shadows, and worse, so much worse."

The cat lay down till it was nose to nose with the mouse.  "Well my dear mouse, I don't eat mice unfortunately."  If a mouse could look disappointed, it did so admirably.  "I prefer fish in fact, so if you were to grow fins and swim through the rivers, I would be happy to kill you."  The mouse looked blankly, which was easy for a mouse.  "Why are you smiling at me?  I am so sad."   Hmph.  Another tactic maybe?

"You are such a handsome little mouse.  Infact, in all my days I have never seen a mouse so handsome.  I even bet that if a cat were to catch you, they would not eat you, because you looked so fine."

"Oh."

Finally, thought the cat, some progress.

"You mean that?"

"Yes, of course."

"Love me." Said the mouse.   If the cats balance wasn't so fine tuned it would have fallen over.  If it wasn't for its sense of occassion, it made have made the social faux pais of running over a fence, or up a tree.  "I can't"

I don't believe it .  The cat peered down at teary little eyes.  A heart broken mouse.  Oh what a bad cat am I ?

"I thought you said.."

"Yes, but I meant, well, another mouse maybe?"

"I don't want another mouse, I want you.  I have to watch you everyday, and I do not know where you go.  And it hurts me, and I live in fear too.  And when I think of you I forget this".

"I am truly sorry mouse.  There's plenty of cats like me, really."

The mouse shook its head vehemently  "No there are not!  I will never find a cat like you again!..Kill me please, I cannot live like this.  I have nowhere to go. Kill me and be done with it. You were nice to me, and you do not want to know me now, so, please, this small mercy."

If mice were built for anything, it was looking helpless.  As the mouse pleaded the cat regretted, and finally its heart sank.

"I did not mean to hurt you little one.  Can you not be happy?"

"Be with me."

"I cannot.  I am truly sorry"

"Then..."

Such a small mouse. I would not have noticed it, the cat pondered. Such a charming mouse, but, I cannot love such a little thing.  And yet I cannot kill it.

The mouse closed it's eyes.  "Do it.  Please."

The cat ran, over a fence, through a field, fast as it could.  It could not kill nor love. It found other cats and, eventually, forgot the whole sad episode.

When the little mouse opened its eyes and saw the cat gone, it went on.  It had no choice.  But it never really lived.  It never forgot the cat, which always seemed like yesterday.  Yesterday, though bitter, was where it would choose to live.

After all, without the cat, it was just that lonely little mouse.  Even what hurt it made it feel something at least.  A memory of its own.  It could hate, and love now, and knew not the difference.  Could not fathom these alluring things that would neither kill nor heal, and realised the worst pain is not rejection,

but being a mouse.

The cat stopped by sometimes.  To see if the mouse was ok.  Unseen.  The mouse sometimes thought it saw something outside of its hole, but never ventured out, just sat in there and yearned. Dreamt mouse dreams.  And eventually even the shadows stopped, even the figments refused to appear.  Cat had found another life.  Did not have time.  Nor did mouse.

And the end.

=================================

Cat settled down in an apartment somewhere uptown.  She spends most of her time on the prowl, and checking her eyelids for holes, but since having a little one, Pino, she finds her paws full around the house most of the time.  But she doesn't mind.

It's all she wanted.  Kittens.  A place of her own.

Mouse met a field mouse, whom he felt happy with, but never as it was.  She already had 1,678 children, but he didn't mind one bit.  Christmas was a nightmare, as were outings to the park, but the were always enjoyable little ventures.  He still felt alone.

He met his end bravely, with the heart of a much larger creature.  His great great great grandchildren always remembered him most fondly, when they thought of him telling the tale about when he confronted a cat.  Indeed.  His only tale.

=================

If something runs, let it go, because sometimes it's bigger than you and you can't catch it.

Sometimes it's smaller than you, so go easy, a little and full heart weighs less than a big empty one.  It's easy to carry. Won't slow you down.  But it's delicate.

Life happens by accident and at the same time we make our own choices.  Don't judge too much with your eyes.  We look at what we are told to look at. Don't expect the last drink to taste any different from the first.

The greatest strength always shows most were there should be none.

Be a suprise  Show humility.

Be a nice person, because even if you don't mean it, you will trick people into being nice too.

Acknowledge that some things will be beyond your control, but never be afraid to look them in the eye.

Go easy on each other.  We're all fragile little creatures after all.
