soooooo.... i got my hands on dA's new 'eclipse' site layout, and my initial impression is:

it's mostly crap.

frontpage notifications

the main problem is that everything is now HUGE. comments and replies in your inbox are HUGE and surrounded by clutter (a section of your original comment if it is a reply, a thumbnail of the deviation the conversation is happening on etc.). status updates are HUGE empty boxes with a few words in the middle.

Inbox select

'feedback' (formerly known as your messages/inbox/whatever) now displays everything in a single feed, rather than dividing it up into sections, though it looks like you can 'group by type'. each message takes up so much space, though, that you can only see about 2 on your screen at a time. i don't know if it is designed to work better on mobile than desktop, but i do know that over 70% of my visitors are on desktops, so this will be shit for most of you.

home page

i haven't added a cover pic (v facebooky), but that's about the only customisation you can do to your homepage at the moment apart from re-adding status updates. notice how massive the box for the status update is? it dwarfs the pics themselves, but really doesn't offer much. journals have also disappeared from the home page :(

journals

one minor improvement is that journals, statuses and polls now have their own section, with equal billing. so that's cool. still made of unnecessary HUGE empty boxes, of course, so i'm still rating it as shit. something interesting is that the submit menu now lists 'deviation' 'status update' 'journal' 'literature' and 'poll' separately, so it looks like 'deviations' and 'literature' have been separated out, and there is FINALLY a direct way to create a poll.

what i'll be interested to see is how stuff created in eclipse (like this journal) look when viewed in classic dA, and i will be finding that out as soon as i've posted this because i will be switching back again as fast as i can run! XO

Activity

switching between classic dA and eclipse is messing journals up: the ones i've written in eclipse are only partially showing up in classic (front page not updating, not all showing up in 'journal history' ), so here are the direct links to them:

eclipse and empty space

that's right, i have once again descended into the vortex of emptiness and questionable design choices that is dA Eclipse. this time i thought i'd do a couple of side-by-side comparisons of normal/classic dA vs Eclipse:

Profile Page

with the current dA user profile about half the page is art and half journal/status, with a small menu across the top. when you load the same page in eclipse, it is closer to 1/4 art, and is mostly taken up by the cover pic and very, very spaced out info section. but the page doesn't load at the top: you can only see the bottom of the cover image when the page loads. to see the whole thing, you have to scroll up, at which point the art vanishes off the page entirely.

eclipsed, you might say.

Statuses

the status feed in classic dA is, admittedly, a mess: it is full of unnecessary updates (no need to fill it with deviations and journals submitted, as they are already in other sections on the page - it would make much more sense to have it as status updates only). but the actual statuses themselves are far better in classic dA than in eclipse.  eclipse, for some reason, thinks that we would be better off looking at more empty space. it is so important for us to see more empty space that it is in fact necessary to remove all the useful information from the status: it has junked the number of comments and comment preview, both of which give the reader a sense of whether there's a discussion worth reading. now there's nothing to tell you whether a status is the trailhead for a lively debate or whether there is nothing more to it. all this free space isn't enough, though: in order to squeeze out a little more emptiness, eclipse has also made the remaining text smaller so that it doesn't get in the way of the glorious blank square... it's also very tedious that you can't actually see when the post was written: the date has been replaced by a vague 'a month ago'.

i feel like the effort of hiding total eclipse of the heart lyrics in yesterday's journal on eclipse rather went to waste
miraculously, i still have a bunch of scheduled uploads waiting to go for november as well as all the ones in october. this is so out of character for me...
unsolicited dick pics, the group admin's bane: seriously, put it away
anyone been following Moriwth's series of q&as with Daggerhammer? it's an absolutely adorable look at a 24/7 kinky lifestyle (i have so much dA to catch up on ^ ^; )

i can't believe it's nearly a year since i drew this and i still haven't finished it ^ ^;
And then she fell into a fantasy world by Caregan
i'm really glad to see that AVGDID is going to be able to continue - i've been doing my best to do my bit to keep submissions flowing, but i just don't have the time any more, and i always feel guilty when i've let things slip :/
if these two get 250 faves, they lose the dresses
if that version gets 250 faves, they lose their underwear too...
Shower girls 1 by Caregan
it's aaaaages since i did a multi-version pic like the chun-li ones. those ones eventually went up to around 1000 faves, but i'm keeping it simple with these two :3
as i get closer to 500k (yes i'm impatient i know) i thought i'd try to find the things i've done for previous round numbers:
Thank you by Caregan an epic quest
http://caregan.deviantart.com/journal/poll/1358973/(free pic vote now) http://caregan.deviantart.com/journal/poll/1358973/(free pic vote now) http://caregan.deviantart.com/journal/poll/1358973/(you get the idea)

now, seeing as you all failed in your task to find the juumanjitto kiriban, i am very mock-disappointed with you. but seeing as i'm going to be drawing something anyway, i thought i'd be democratic and open it to your suggestions.
so http://caregan.deviantart.com/journal/poll/1358973/ (GO HERE) to vote in the poll for who i should draw a pic of. in order to be fair, i shall be waiting until i have a quorum of at least 100 votes - so vote if you haven't or there'll be no art this month!

that's right: the time has come for you all to undertake a quest, a search for the legendary creature known as the juumanhitto. little is known about this rare and elusive beast, save that which has survived as fragmented, garbled verses i
the 123456pv quest

dear friends and fellow adventurers
you may recall that a few months ago, during my expedition in search of the juumanhitto, i came across many stories hinting at the existence of that elusive beast from across the world. in due course our searches were rewarded, and the juumanhitto, lured out by the magic round number under the light of the full moon, was successfully photographed by the avid naturalist and of notorious birdwatcher OOM-Shifter.
but while collecting tales of the juumanhitto (see professor caregan alaw "in search of the shíwàn", dubious university press, 2010 http://caregan.deviantart.com/journal/33754567/) i came to hear of another legendary creature, often spoken of in the same sources as the juumanhitto. this beast is said to be a close relative of the juumanhitto, sometimes called yīèrsān sìwǔliù, belonging as it does to the same

i had totally forgotten the utterly mad kiriban hunts i used to do (complete with indiana kate and a llama), so i am including them alongside the pics i drew for 10k, 100k, and 300k
i realised that i'm only averaging 1 picture every 2 months this year, so today i went a bit crazy and drew 5. (gotta have something ready for reaching 500,000pv next month!)

now my hand has totally cramped up :S

Oh, I can't believe it. Usually I'm the one making the abstruse music references that fall on deaf ears, so I deeply, deeply apologize for not putting the hints together with the title and snagging the references. Just one more data point that I'm getting old....

I'll try to pay more attention, dear Caregan. Don't give up.

Just discovered your gallery. Great fun!
And pretty sexy as well.
I like the Asian and the Wild West stuff best, well I'm always dreaming about foreign or 'barbarian' worlds.
Keep it up!

glad you like it :D
i know what you mean about barbarian (etc.) worlds - some day i'll get around to expanding 'and then she fell into a fantasy world' into a proper story, at the least ^ ^

sometimes i feel like we should give them names or some kind of identity, but that might make them harder to draw...
