A Chemistry of Errors
It was a cool September afternoon, and Toby sat at the diner, sharing a milkshake with Annie while she was on break.
“So how was your trip to the city?” Annie asked.
Toby gulped. He didn’t want to tell his girlfriend that he had lost all the money he had saved up for homecoming, and he definitely didn’t want to tell her that it was possibly an elderly woman that had stolen it. “Oh, it was, uh, fun. Y’know. We went to an art museum, saw some…things. What’d you do while I was away?” Toby deflected.
Annie’s expression suddenly shifted to one of exasperation, and it became apparent she was about to go on one of her famous rants. “Well, Delores and I went to the library to study, but Ruby took the only copy of Beowulf. She refused to let us even look at it, and before we could even argue about Ms. Standiford kicked us out for causing a disturbance.”
“I’ve been there before…although it’s usually Nicholas who kicks me out. He thinks bein’ hall monitor means he can do whatever he wants,”
