Space Travel Star Trail

After shooting "Space Travel" I thought it would be fun to do a star trail. Ideally I would like to do a star trail with a stop sign. Maybe another day. I also would have liked to shoot a lot longer but there was a lot of dew in the air, and I only got 30 minutes in before the lens started to fog over.

Canon 60D
Tamron 10-24mm Lens @ 11mm
ISO 1600
Combination of sixty 30 second exposures
RAW files converted to 16bit Tifs, then stacked in StarTrails [link]
Final processing in Photoshop Elements 8.0
Sign lightpainted with a mobile phone screen in one of the frames.
Feel free to tell me which one you like the best.

Edit: Woohoo!!! It's a DD. A big Thank You to all who faved and commented on this photo, and a particularly huge Thanks to those who suggested it and awarded it

Although there are many Star Trail images out there, this is probably one of the best that I have seen. It's one thing to do just a star trail image, it's another to incorporate elements such as light painting, and perfect use of landmarks, or in this case road signs.
The composition of this image makes you giggle a bit at the absurdity of being able to pick a direction to the stars, but at the same time you're drawn in to another universe almost... a universe where dreams can come true, and traveling through the stars is possible! Kinda reminiscent of Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

Thank you so much for this critique of my work :D I'm pleased with how this turned out, and blown away by the reaction to it here on DA. There are a few things I would do different if I had the time again. The framing of the horizon is better on the static shot, and I must have bumped the lens when I was seting up for the startrail, as it was shot at 11mm, not 10mm, thus I cut off the corner of the sign.

By the way- The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy is my all time fav book. Love it. :D

Thank you once again.

You're welcome :) it's images like these that keep me going as a photographer. I'm heading out to San Diego in a couple weeks and will be attempting some ocean/cliff star trail shots :)

And yes, Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy is one of the best ever written IMO... and I loved the movie too... I think they did a descent job with it :)

Cheers,

Can't wait to see what you come up with in San Diego :D
Creative--Dragon's avatar
Yeah me either :)
I've never used my wide angle to do star trail shots... so I'm planning on doing one with the ocean and cliffs in the foreground and stars streaking across the sky :D

how do you warp that thing!? O_O so cooooool!!!!
CapturingTheNight's avatar
Thank you :D No warp involved.  It is all natural.  That is how the stars naturally rotate through the night sky over time.
jarzseald's avatar
How you manage to capture the rotation of the earth?? sorry for my dumb question. :3 hehehehe

Faved...
and my personal favorite of the two...
Using "movement"...
creates more power...
in this...
composition takes over...
and is stirring up rules of balance...!

The other picture...
is a true photo...
street photography at night...
This one is a cover for a cartoon magazine...!

And...
I still "want it" without the landscape...!
Then...
It belongs in any museum of modern art...!

Greetings to You Greg...Jakob.

I'll see what I can do about removing that landscape for you :D Thanks again for the great feedback

I prefer this sign to a stop sign actually. It invites me to explore space; there is no wrong turn and you don't have to stop.

Thanks for the nice feedback :D
