Little Slice of Texas

“We certainly aren’t in Texas anymore.” John chuckled as he sat on Eagle watching the ocean rolling near the ring they would soon perform in. Eagle snorted and shook his head to get some summer flies off him. Matthew smiled as he patted the stallion to keep him company as they waited.

“No, we most certainly aren’t. We are very far from home.” Matthew chuckled as he adjusted the bridle for the umpteenth time. 

“How come you didn’t compete?” John asked, looking down at his recent employer and mentor. Matthew sighed as he stroked Eagle’s ears.

“Didn’t have the right horse for it. Optimus is already busy working towards the FEI Championship, it didn’t seem fair to put this on his plate as well. And I’m still looking for my next steed. Plus Alex already had Ironside qualified in time, it just seemed like a good chance to give him the spotlight.” Matthew explained wondering how Optimus’ training was going in his absence. 

“And we know he loves the spotlight.” John joked and Matthew nodded. The cheering roared up as the previous contender finished their route and came to a stop. John gripped the reins a little tighter, they were good but were they good enough for the Olympics? John wasn’t so sure. He was the youngest of their team competing and definitely lacked time in the saddle compared to the other two.

“Hey, just remember. Being here is enough of a prize. Not everyone can say they performed at the Olympics. Just enjoy the ride and if we place, we place. If not, we still get to celebrate with everyone else. And we got these cool shirts.” Matthew joked tugging on his team Olympic shirt. John sighed and nodded. Fixing his hat one more time as their name was called.
