I confess I feel very alone in this fandom. I imagine Harry Potter has somewhat overshadowed it, and that only fantasy fans know about it. The size of the books must also discourage many from reading this saga. 
Ne lis surtout pas alors, parce que ça spoile. Je m'efforce moi-même d'éviter les spoilers, se faire spoiler cette série serait vraiment un gâchis !
I don't really have an official version. In my mind, Slate is their mother but didn't want to raise them so she gave them to River/Gray. But I totally approve the headcon that one of them is trans (River for me) since Silver Stripe even has the same shade of gray as him.
