As the other passengers dispersed to their proper destinations, Evelyn stayed. Standing by the bench was a young teenage boy grinning from ear to ear. Walking away was an option and usually worked well for her. Not this time. Against her better judgment, she pulled out a folded piece of paper from her pocket; Silas’ letter. She kept it to her side, waiting for her admirer to make the first move.
Evelyn met his joyful exuberance with a blank stare, so business as usual. Her anger and apathy towards, well, existing, were evident in her posture. If nothing else, it was an effective strategy to be left alone. Not by everyone, unfortunately. Some people found this quality of hers attractive.
“You're even more beautiful than our previous encounter,” complimented Silas to Evelyn’s disgust. “If only you could learn to wear articles of clothing that emphasized what I already see in you.”
The woman of nineteen years pushed her glasses up the ridge of her

To my Crimson-Haired Angel,
I received the letter you transcribed for your aunt’s reading pleasure. Apologies for the intrusion, but I requested our postal service to inform me of any letter, authored by you, finding its way into town. It has been too long since we last gazed into each other’s eyes. How I long for our discourse on the topic of humanity. You are my only equal.
Fret not, my dear, your letter has found its way to its rightful destination. How it would pain me so, to see your wishes not come into fruition. I am curious though as to why now you decide to return. Dare I say, the Trevor excuse is merely a ploy to see the one man who made you feel whole? I am beyond my pubescent stage, Evelyn. Imagine all that we can accomplish now that simply could not be done all those years previously.
A lot has changed since we last talked, I will be sure to greet you upon arrival back into Granerfield. We have too much to catch up on. Surprises

How long had she been riding the bus? Three, maybe four hours? Not the best situation to be in, what with the other riders surrounding her. Being so close to people reminded her of why she preferred solitude. The bus could have been Mr. Clean certified, and she’d still hate sitting in it. But she had no choice in the matter. The bus was her only viable means of transportation to Granerfield, Ohio.
She peered out the window at the green flatlands of the state. The dirty windows and her lint-covered glasses, painted a rather tainted picture of her old home. To be honest, that looked about right. Just as riding this person-infested vehicle was a decision made out of necessity, so too was returning home. She had her reasons, of course. Although, if she knew of what was transpiring in the backwater town of Granerfield, perhaps she would have remained home instead.
“Yo, Frankie, didn’ ya read that already?”
To keep his mind occupied while Silas was

Dear Aunt,
Don’t humor yourself and think this is me trying to bury the hatchet with you. The only reason I’m writing this letter is that I did not want to hear your voice over the phone when I inform you of recent developments. I got a job as a waitress at a local diner. It’s disgusting work, but it means a steady paycheck.
Trevor deserves a home that isn’t run by a bitch who should’ve choked on her tongue years ago. And no, I don’t count him living with Dan as an improvement. Dan is the second-worst thing to happen to him since being your son. I just don’t understand you people. You and your sister had kids you didn’t want, and instead of aborting us, you went through with the births. What was it? A lost bet? Retardation?
Was it to push your mental shit onto snot-nosed kids? Here’s an idea: kill yourself. If you’re so miserable, how hard is it to throw a tie over a door to hang yourself? And if that sounds too long, grab the gun you keep in

“So, what do you think?”
Silas leaned back in his chair contemplatively. His two companions weaved a tale of mystery, drama, and romance in a surprisingly engaging way. And Frank thought himself a non-storyteller, amazing. “Remind me again why you think this Rosie isn’t Dan’s cousin.”
“The way he looked at her, Silas. No one looks at their cousin like that.”
Silas sighed. “Frank, you must have an open mind with people. This girl being his cousin doesn’t mean he can’t want her sexually.”
Frank was mortified. “But-“
“But nothing,” Silas hissed. “Our minds don’t work in a binary, Frank. Simply because you find something abhorrent, doesn’t mean it’s not true. If that were the case, Prescott wouldn’t exist.”
His companion slumped back in his chair angrily.
“We know Dan to be a desperate child, and desperate children will do anything to get what they want. And if the girl is as braindead as you claim her to be, then all the better in Dan’s

“Welcome back, Frankie,” shouted Joey as Frank shut the door behind him.
Frank mumbled an acknowledgment. He didn’t want to talk about the one-on-one he had with Dawn. Instead, he wanted to sit on the couch and wait for Silas to return.
The pair were currently in a small, one-story house they shared with Silas. In fact, the three of them lived together. Actual ownership of the home fell to Joey’s uncle, but whether or not the house was owned legally was anyone’s guess. Regardless, the place worked as a headquarters. It was small and cozy, having all the necessities one needed in life.
Frank joined Joey on the couch, who was currently watching an episode of the Warriors from Beyond the Stars cartoon series. The show had an all-female cast, so Joey’s love for it was nonsensical to Frank.
“Paper?”
“Yeah.”
Joey handed his friend the daily newspaper. A teenage boy who liked being kept up-to-date on current events. What. A. Weirdo.
“Sure ya

In his hands was a whoopie pie. A layer of creamy vanilla mushed between two chocolate cakes. If that didn’t prove the existence of God, Joey had yet to find any other piece of evidence. He tore into the snack like it was his first experience with it.
“Frankie, I’m tellin’ ya, this is THE reason to live.”
Frank wasn’t listening. He’d been trying to call Silas for the past hour, and yet he kept getting the voicemail message. “This is Silas, I’ll call you back if you have something of value for me.”
“Gah! Where the Hell is he?”
He and Joey were sitting outside a convenience store. After not being able to reach Silas four times in a row, Joey suggested they stop for a snack. Clearly, one of them took the situation more seriously than the other.
“Calm down, bro! Ya still haven’t eaten ya whoopie,” Joey said with a mouthful of the chocolate and vanilla.
“Joey, I’m trying to talk to Silas because, you know, IT’S IMPORTANT!”
Joey rubbed the

Claire! Claire! You want to play with me?!
I’d love to, Rosie. What are we playing?
Oh, well, the knight was about to save the princess. You can be the knight.
Okay, and this princess wouldn’t just so happen to be named Princess Rosie, would she?
M-maybe.
‘Princess Rosie, I’m here to rescue you!’
Rosie’s eyes opened, only to be greeted by the bright sun. How could such a beautiful ball be so mean? As she rubbed her now watery eyes, Dan approached her.
“Wow, I leave you alone for five minutes and you doze off.”
Rosie giggled nervously. “This chair was very comfy.”
A wooden bench…comfy? He shrugged it off.
“Ooooh, you brought ice cream?”
He smiled as he handed her a red-colored swirl on a cone. “It’s strawberry, do you like it?”
“YUM!”
“I’ll take that as a yes,” chuckled Dan. He sat next to her on the bench and consumed his chocolate ice cream. He much preferred vanilla, but the last thing he wanted Rosie to think was that

There he was, pinned up against a wall of lockers. His fellow students watched in anticipation as Silas readied for a painful punch to the face. Trevor, having accepted his fate, waited for the inevitable. Middle school had been fun for the short time he experienced it. Okay, maybe ‘fun’ was pushing it, but it wasn’t too bad, right? Oh, who was he kidding? His life sucked.
Next to Silas stood an antsy Joey. He wanted to see Trevor put in his place. Just seeing such a weak loser pinned by a stronger man felt invigorating. His boss deserved all the respect the other students had to offer. Smart, cunning, and the strongest boy in the grade. None of the other male students could compare to such a godly gift.
But as his boss pulled his fist back, Joey caught something in the corner of his eye. He turned his head to see down the hall and nearly defecated himself.
“B-boss!” Joey uttered. But Silas, too engrossed in the moment to pay any attention to

“You let Dawn Prescott help you?” Dan laughed. “That’s sad, man.”
“I was lost in the woods,” Trevor shot back. “She knew the way back.”
“Whatever.” Dan dismissed the conversation rather than start an argument.
“It’s cool that I stay over right?”
“Sure, my mom loves you, so you should be good.”
Trevor fell back onto the couch with a sense of freedom. “Thanks, Dan. I can’t go back home.”
“It’s really gotten THAT bad?”
“I did absolutely nothing and she still found a reason to scream her lungs out.”
His friend nodded, unfazed by the turn of events. This was bound to happen sooner or later, and the only one who thought otherwise was Trevor. The poor dolt couldn’t read the writing on the wall, not that Dan would say that out loud. Trevor was many things, but a person able to take criticism wasn’t one of them. But hey, that’s why he had Dan.
Dan tossed a juice box his way, which he gladly accepted.
“So, you two gonna be a
