Ren Aomori had been expectantly waiting for his latest crop of foals, he'd been pacing most mornings watching the monitors of the foaling barn and hoping for the first of what he anticipated to be the best crop they'd produced so far. On this particular morning the air was heavy, thick and full, a hard storm had lashed out against the island overnight and had left a lot of damage in it's wake. It was a Sunday and the only thing he had on his mind was which mare would drop first.
And then he saw two of his bay mares start to fuss in their stalls, they shifted and moved around and all Ren could do was grin. The two most prized mares on the island were about to drop what he expected to be two regal foals! One the offspring of Kizuna, a triple crown winner and the other a offspring of Golden Run. Ren moved quickly then hoping to get down there to see both foals born, he loved to be there first to get the impression of them and welcome the new babies into the world.
When he got to the barn the first mare was on the ground already dropping a handsome bay, a colt! Ren grinned and went to assist her, pulling the foal and cleaning him up. Once Ren was sure he was settled he turned his attention to the other mare, she was just standing in the corner pawing at the floor of her stall and the thick covering of it. It took Ren a moment to realize she was basically burying the black foal that was beneath all of the covering. He rushed in and got her away from the foal before going to pull it out, once he got the foal where he could see it he quickly saw the knob kneed and crooked leg foal was a colt.
"Oh you poor thing..." Ren curled the foal up into his arms and took him out of the stall so the vet could get a look at him. Other than his legs being a bit of a mess he looked to be in good health, he was flashy with a big white blaze and closely resembled his great grandsire, but to say the staff was disappointed at his condition was an understatement.
Both colts would stay with their mothers for a bit before they were passed off to nurse mares, the knobby kneed colt grew bigger and bigger by the day. At first the two colts got along smashingly, they would relax together and sleep on each other in the field. But as they started to learn to run and both got faster and faster the black colt got meaner and meaner. By the time he was a yearling he had to be separated from the others because he would turn aggressive if they tried to run. At first the trainer thought it was simply because he was in pain because of his legs but as he grew the legs straightened and his attitude didn't improve. The bay on the other hand...was a lamb. A fierce fast lamb that raced over the pastures like he was born to fly, and indeed he was.
Ren watched them both grow, debating on which one he would consign to the sales and which would bear the standard of the breeding stables. The bay was sharp and he knew they could find him a fantastic home, but the black? If he consigned the black he was sure the colt would end up in a slaughter house before he was two. In good faith he couldn't do that to the colt who fought so hard to show the world he was special. And so, he made the decision to sell the bay. The colt went for a heavy price, nearly two million yen and Ren knew that he would earn much more than that in his career. And the black? Well the black was fitted in the colors of his farm and would bear the banner of their breeding stock, hopefully Ren's good intentions would pay off for them...and not backfire.
If only Ren knew then how these two colts would turn out...perhaps he'd have kept them both.
