It had been over a year since Nichi had been under the cherry blossom trees of his birth place, Waylon had talked to the group at Sakura Kyusha to allow him to board his two entries for the Japan Cup on the farm and the owner Ren Aomori graciously allowed both Maze and Nichi to stay. Ren was honestly excited to see his former prized great grandson of Sunday Silence and he watched eagerly as both horses unloaded. The little red mare was lovely, but he only had eyes for for the black stallion.
The last time he'd seen Nichi had been the day he'd put him up for auction, the horse had been injured in a training accident and he had been completely pitiful for the bulk of the year they'd had him. There was nothing they could do to reinvigorate the stallion, and Ren had known that the best thing for him was to give him a new life, in a new home. So he'd entered him in the auction and watched as the once great colt of Sakura passed into the hands of a man from the USA.
As Nichi went into training and into racing again Waylon sent Ren constant updates, he felt that the man had truly cared about Nichi and that he was looking for his best interest when he'd sold him. Ren was thankful and pleased with what he saw, the big stallion was coming back into himself and had been performing well for Fox Harbor Farms in the US. It was a good sign, and when he'd been asked if he would be able to house the FHF team for the Japan Cup he couldn't say no.
Walking up to Nichi he reached out and carefully rubbed the stallion's cheek, the horse pressed into the touch and snorted softly before lifting his head to nibble at Ren's shirt. He had not forgotten his old master, how could he? Ren was the first person he saw when he was born, and the only one that stayed by his side when he was injured. Nichi had never understood the day that he left for Fox Harbor why the man that had been so good to him his whole life was suddenly done with him, and it had negatively affected his racing and training for a while.
Now, seeing his old master again he felt that he hadn't done anything and that Ren had never in fact been done with him. But rather, had let him go to a place where he could thrive again. Sakura wasn't a breeding farm, it raced only and his career had been slowly winding down as it was. At Fox Harbor there were many opportunities for an older horse like him, and he felt that he would always have a place there.
Once they were settled Waylon and Ren turned Maze and Nichi out into one of the larger paddocks by themselves so they could exercise after their long flight. Nichi trotted right up to the cherry blossoms that the farm was named after and stuck his nose in them before rearing and taking off at full speed. Maze instinctively chased after him, running along the fenceline with the stallion and reveling in this new territory. Nichi was loving every minute of it, and even when he could feel the burning in his muscles that told him he'd run too long he couldn't ease himself up until he'd made it back to those cherry blossoms again.
Waylon and Ren were watching from the fenceline, smiling as the two horses enjoyed themselves.
"It's good to see him here again, his efforts built this farm into what it is now. I regretted selling him the moment I even thought about it, but I see he is doing well with you. That makes me very happy."
"He is an amazing horse, it's been our pleasure to have him with us. And I am thankful every day for you selling him, I don't know where we would be without him. He's raced well, but he's more than that. He brought life into the farm, and each day we get to work with him is special."
"I'm glad to hear that." Ren watched the two run for a few more moments before looking at Waylon, "Would you like some tea? I'd love to talk to you about an idea I have."
"Of course." Waylon and Ren pulled off the fence as Nichi finally settled to graze beneath the cherry blossoms, as he had for so many years here.
