Description
The first year in racing for Fox Harbor Farms had brought great thrills for the team, they'd come onto the scene late in the year with a handful of racers. August was their debut and they came out hitting the board, but fizzled in their next few starts. After a few very calculated horse acquisitions they once again found themselves hitting the board and even winning races.
It was thrilling and exciting for the homegrown team, Waylon had sunk so much of the family money into the new adventure that he'd thinned his broodmare band down to the bare minimum and was considering auctioning the last few off before Colton Jones came to him with a proposition. He and his sister would start to add money to the coffers, buying horses with Waylon and building on the farm if they were able to hold a share of everything FHF. The deal was struck and the team became very tight nit. By the end of fall they were becoming a little dark horse stable, quick on the trails of other larger and more established racing stables.
Everything was incredibly exhilarating and by the end of the year they were racing 10 starters, including a brilliant two year old that Waylon was exceptionally proud of. And tonight they were here to see if their year had done enough to be recognized by more than just the team. Taking a breath Waylon rolled his glass between his hands and looked over to Colton.
"You'd think I was waiting on one of the kids to be born again..."
"It's fine Waylon, there's nothing to worry about."
"There is plenty to worry about, we turned in ten names Colt. If even one of them gets pulled it would mean we're doing something right."
"Our numbers say we're doing something right Waylon."
"You know what I mean."
"Just relax, enjoy the night. There are a lot of good friends here, a lot of people you should get to know better."
"You know I'm not much for talking...that's why I have you and Cecily." Colton laughed and gave a shake of his head at his friend.
"Harley is talkative enough for everyone, you should have brought him tonight."
"He can come to the next one."
There was another shake of his head and he took a drink of wine before leaning back and waiting for the program to start. Though he didn't want to tell Waylon, he was nervous too but more for the fact that they had more than doubled their amount of racers for the coming year, and if they did do well here tonight they'd have a lot to prove going forward. But tonight was supposed to be a celebration! And he was going to leave his anxiety right where it belonged, at home.
The program started then though and their focus went to the awards. The crossbred awards started the night and Waylon leaned over to Cecily to whisper about getting Leche in the running for next year. Their little pony was a good little eventer and he knew that he was worthy of an award like that too, in time at least.
And then it was onto the awards that Waylon had nominated horses for, he couldn't help but hide his face in his hands as they started talking about the TS Mare of the Year. There were a lot of worthy mares that they'd seen this year and honestly he didn't think any of his would be in the running. Well...he was a little wrong on that one! Colton slapped his shoulder after a moment and just stared at him.
"Waylon! Sabrina won!!" Waylon stared at him and blinked before looking up and sure enough, they were calling Sabrina's name again! Popping up on his feet he rushed himself up there to accept the award and half stumbled back to his seat in disbelief. Sabrina, the little white filly Waylon had found hiding in the back of a sale pen in the late summer, terrified out of her mind and unruly to boot had just won Mare of the Year. Colton had thought he was insane bringing the little scrawny filly to the farm and pushing her into large races halfway across the world. But he'd seen something, seen her attitude, seen her spirit, and he knew the little white could do more than anyone at that sale had expected of her. Though she had yet to break her maiden she was sporting $100,500 in earnings in five outs, never finishing worse than 5th. To say he was proud of her was an understatement, but this? He hadn't expected this!
His mind was on the little trophy in his hand when Colton slapped his shoulder again, "Waylon! Jagger won too!!" Looking up, once again in disbelief he quickly realized that Colton was right once again and though he went and accepted the trophy he walked over to Dallas and the White Blood Stables team to deliver it with a bright smile.
Leasing Jagger had been a whim, but he'd liked what he'd seen in the stallion and couldn't let an opportunity to work with him pass him by. Waylon was so incredibly thankful to have the opportunity and had extended the lease when he'd been asked in the winter, because honestly he wasn't ready to let the stallion go. Though he knew at some point Dallas and the team would want Jagger back, he and the team couldn't help but let the wild bay boy into their hearts.
When he got back to the table he just smiled at Colton and clapped his shoulder, "You were right...there was nothing to be nervous about."
Colton just grinned back, "We did good boss. We did good."
When Waylon got home he commissioned a portrait to be done of the two winners for the trophy room, and once it was completed it was placed over the TS Mare of the Year trophy and a replica of the TS Stallion of the Year trophy. It was a badge of honor for the team, but so much more than that, it was also validation that all his hard choices were for the right reasons. And that he hadn't lost his family's legacy, only increased it.
Letting his fingers run across the brush strokes of Sabrina's side of the portrait he sighed softly, "I hope this all would make them proud..." Thinking of his father and the generations of horsemen before who put their blood, sweat, and tears into this property and the horses that they owned he only hoped that their short year of success had made them proud.
