Today was Nichi's first day back on the track since his breakdown in Australia, they had been tentatively training him. Getting him used to being ridden again, seeing if he stayed sound after before he was put back on the track. He'd done a light warm up, but today was the important day. Today they would be doing a full gallop, his first big blowout since his injury, and hopefully they'd see something that would tell them it was time to send him to WBS for their summer shows.
Colton mounted up and did a slow trot around to get the old horse's muscles warmed up, and when it was time to run him he hammered down and put him into a hard gallop under hand. It took a moment for Nichi to get comfortable racing like this again, and finally he seemed to adjust well and get into rhythm once more. Waylon was leaning against the rail watching his big black stallion fight back and pick himself back up.
After the stallion passed the final pole he was slowed down to a jog and turned back around to head to Waylon. Colton smiled softly as he eased up next to his boss and relaxed against Nichi's back.
"How'd he look?"
"Good as ever, how'd he feel?"
"Slow, but by the end there he was ready to give me more. He's a bit off in that leg, but with some more work I think he'll be ready."
"Good, his first go is going to be tough. But I'm going to send him back to White Blood, back into their senior races. It'll be a tough test, but it'll be the best place for him."
"You're going to run him against Ghost and Jagger again? Like this? He'll run his heart out trying to beat those two, you know that."
"I do, but the vet says he's ready for it and he'd be more defeated running in a lower class race than against the best."
"That's true...who you going to put up?"
"You, Harley can mount up on Jagger this time. I need my most experience hands on this guy, keep him from running himself to death."
"I'll do my best, but you know he'll fight for that lead if it's the last thing he does."
"We'll just make sure it's not the last thing then huh?"
