Story:
It was time to tame the Demon, after his last race coming in second after thoroughly breaking the spirit of his stablemate things had to change. And so the first thing they decided to do was find a training partner for Demon that could stick with him both on the turf as well as in the attitude department. It wasn't hard to find the right stallion, he was sitting in his paddock trying to tear the place apart from boredom. Retraining wasn't working and Nichi needed a job, and so...another new beginning for the stallion was made as he was shipped to Australia with Demon to serve as his training buddy. And then the next part of the plan was formed. Harley was going to be getting some equipment assistance in controling the beast. Draw reins for training, a figure eight noseband, and to top it off full cup blinders to try and make the colt depend solely on Harley's commands.
To say the transition wasn't easy was an understatement. Those first few hours on the sand in Australia had Harley eating more of the beach than he'd ever eaten in his life. Demon chucked him time and time again, one time throwing him so far that he landed in the surf with an uncomfortable noise. But each time he picked himself up and got back in the saddle, determined not to let the colt win even when his body ached and he was tired. The entire time Nichi stood by watching, waiting for the colt to get his act together so they could run, the old stallion had mellowed...somewhat. He was determined himself to see the colt be knocked into shape. So when Harley finally got some sort of cooperation out of Demon, Nichi took off running at a full gallop.
The sound of another horse running drove Demon on, he couldn't see, but he could hear and he tried to run full out...only to get restrained hard but something on his mouth. There was some twisting and kicking, bucking and rearing but finally he more or less obeyed a forward motion. Harley held tight and offered him soft commands until he got him alongside Nichi. The colt recognized he was in a competition then and he tried to pull away again, this time though Harley had him in hand and pulled him up. The other jockey urged Nichi on and Demon tried to go only once again to be pulled back, they were not trying to break his spirit so much as remind him that he needed to wait. They continued like that until Demon stopped trying to fight it out with Harley and finally just kept pace right at Nichi's flank.
And then Harley released him, urging him on with a cluck of his tongue and that's when Demon dug in, pulling away inch by inch from Nichi who was being kept in hand. The colt couldn't see it, but he could hear that he was well ahead and finally he seemed to relax. When they were done Demon was thoroughly spent, dripping sweat and looking like a ragdoll. Harley didn't look much better, he had a bloodynose from his effort and was a wee bit pale when he dismounted and yanked the blinders off Demon. Nichi on the other hand looked like he could go two more miles in the sand without breaking a sweat, the old stallion stood there like the champion he was and eyed the colt with a severe sort of disdain. Demon came after him and he snorted before lifting his head and looking off, not giving the colt the time of day. Brats like that were beneath him, and that didn't seem to go over well with Demon who was being led off with eyes narrowed on the big black beast he'd just defeated.
