Sunday Memory is a royally bred horse out of the exceptional sire line of Sunday Silence, a sire of sires, and one of the most prominent sires in Japanese Horse Racing. Born at Shadai Station to the heavily raced mare, Keiai Elegant (King Kamehameha x Post Parade (A.P. Indy)) the striking black colt was a throwback to his great grandsire and just as fiery as Sunday Silence had been.

What they got however was a colt full of tactical speed, that wanted only one thing, to be at the front of the pack. He would exhaust himself to take the lead and hold it for as long as his stamina would allow him, and while that set many track records it also meant that he didn't win as often as he really should have given his pedigree.

His two year old season saw him hit the board in his only two races, it was unremarkable and his stable started reconsidering their investment in the colt. But they took a risk and embarked on another season with Nichi, his debut he won breaking a track record and beating the next horse by 14 lengths, it was a true romp and immediately he was noticed by those around him. Unfortunately, given his style of running, his next race was a terrible loss, a fact that would plague him for much of his career in Japan. His three year old season was incredibly strenuous. He raced in the Japanese Triple Crown and won two of the three legs before being bested by his rival and stablemate Takenshi.

Nichi is not exactly an attractive horse and he never really was. Crooked in the front and turned in on his knees he stands over himself most of the time. With a thinner than his head swan neck, and a ridiculous amount of muscle on his hips he just looks clunky. His action when going slow is ghastly and hard to look at, and he has a tendency to hit himself going at full speed as he's unable to completely clear his front legs. Despite that, what cannot be seen is a massive amount of grit and sheer determination he's got inside of him.
