The return to Japan for Nichi had been...interesting. He had enjoyed romping around his old paddock, seeing his old stablemates and even seeing his old trainer. It seemed to light a fire within his belly as he trained and for Waylon he looked better than he'd ever looked before. But his former trainer thought that it was a good sign that he had returned to his pre-injury form. Finally back to the racer he had been for Sakura back in the day. He'd pushed Waylon to push Nichi, to get more and more out of him and the stallion had responded handily.

But today it was race day, and once again Nichi would find himself on his original home turf. When he stretched his legs on the way to the paddock he held his head high, ears alert and eyes taking everything in. He was being led by Harley and the boy had to smile at the big stallion, "Ready to show them how good you are?" Nichi snorted, cutting eyes to the boy before deciding to chew on his hair. Harley just laughed and swatted him away, "You silly boy, you are pretty relaxed huh?" Another snort and this time a little head toss as they made their way into the saddling area.

After he was saddled and it was time for the post parade, once again Nichi was bright and alert, this time though he was making smooth even strides with Colton on his back like he owned the racecourse. It made Colt smile, and he easily loaded into the starting gate. As always he sat with his rear against the back of the gate, though this time he had a glint in his eye that Colton hadn't seen before. But his former trainer had, and he could tell by the way that Nichi stood in the gate that he was preparing for something. He just hoped that it would be enough to cover the distance and show Waylon and the team at Fox Harbor exactly what he had under the hood.

Waylon had been holding back on Maze for some time, she'd been out only once as a three year old in the Prince of Wales Stakes and what he'd seen had shown him the filly needed to mature. She was showing signs of potential in training and so he'd sent her with Nichi to Japan to see if the older horse could help her get her game face on. She'd shown that she could keep up with the stallion, that she could be focused and deliberate during training. And now today, they were going to put it all to the test. Cecily had given Maze her undivided attention, she'd taken her out every morning for a light jog along the cherry blossoms, groomed her herself, and otherwise just spent time with the filly to try and coax some drive out of her.

As they got closer to race day everyone was pleased with what they were seeing, they were amazed by the results that she was showing, amazed by how much she had matured over the short stay here. And there was a consideration to leave her in Japan for a while, to let her train and race here...if she showed well at the Cup anyway. Waylon knew it was going to be a hard decision either way, but he was interested to see what happened next.

On race day she was calm and collected, standing easily for Cecily and the team and loading without any sort of issue. Even with the reactivity from Gremlin, she held her own. Cecily was concerned that she was going to be too calm, but when the gates opened and she caught Nichi run off she bolted after him as they had done in all their training sessions.
