The Mix of Iron and Blood: Chapter Thirteen

Unseen Previous Chapter The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but it seemed like no one had let the jungle know. Water still came down through the canopy in its own time, in fat irregular drops that struck the broad leaves below like knuckles on a door. Everything dripped. Everything steamed as the heat came up. Elkog had given up on the idea of being dry two days ago, somewhere between the river and that abandoned village, and now simply walked wet, his trousers stuck to his skin and his boots making a squelching sound at every step that he had started to hate. Michelle set the pace, because she was still regaining her strength after being healed. She did not complain about it, she simply walked with her head down and her hand out for branches, and every so often she stopped without warning and stood with her eyes closed, breathing, while the rest of them waited and gave her the time she needed. Then she would say "right" and start again. They had been doing that since first

The Inner Child Runs Free

Focus bounces from place to place a tune playing in my head no headphones in just my mind replaying something on loop or playing it's own playlist of songs it's decided to roll through my head. A job list flickering between the focuses I'm suppose to be doing, ideas occasionally pinging across my mind like pop ups. Feelings, talking, external influence can really add extra load to this bubble I build yet I haven't noticed this bad since back when I was a kid. My focus whilst straining on myself is normally something that I can direct and control fairly accurately so what has fallen loose? Has the inner child broken free? I was thinking we were the same thing yet... An influence that feels more childish and impulsive from back then has resurged itself back to the surface. Thank god I'm done with school as I remember vividly telling my annoyed mother who'd asked why I'm only good at school that it was too hard to be good at home and at school. I can't imagine what I'd be like

The blizzard had seemed to finally blow itself out. Wisps of snow blew through the canyon and danced around the horses’ feet as they made the ascent. Perseus shook out his mane, sending gobs of snow flying in all directions, as he led the way. Looking across the valley, he was glad that they had found the canyon when they did. The landscape was completely changed now and covered in a thick layer of snow and ice. The sun rising in the east cast a beautiful light through the icicles hanging in the tree branches. Percy marveled at the sight for a moment before his heart sank. How on earth would they find food? Before he could worry much longer,...

Her mate lay there in the mud, blood pooled around his dark mane...and he was gone. His eyes were closed but he wasn’t sleeping. At least, not a sleep he would ever wake from. A high pitched keening sound rang in her ears and she wasn’t sure where it came from. Her eyes couldn’t focus and the world felt like it was spinning too quickly. Slowly, so slowly, she went down to her knees in the mud next to Breigo. She curled her body around his and rested her head on his side. ”Go...tell the others…” she whispered to Far...

[CV] Mud and Rain and More Mud

It was an uncharacteristically warm winter day and rain was drizzling from the clouds above. The rain had melted away some of the snow on the ground, leaving puddles of slush everywhere and making it easier to graze on the grass. Perseus was enjoying his morning when a stampede of foals rocketed past him, splashing him all over with cold, muddy slush. Percy blinked rapidly, shocked at the sudden unpleasant feeling, that he didn’t even have time to reprimand the foals before they were gone. Percy sighed and shook himself off. He heard snickering and his ears perked up to see Denna and Sparrow sharing a laugh at his expense. Percy wuffled hi...

That wasn’t to suggest anything was going wrong or that you were uncomfortable, but that things were becoming slow...and boring. Or maybe Gilbert was rubbing off on you, and you thought so by now. Overall, life was good: the people were slowly and steadily earning your trust, although the silver stallion remained at the top of that list, and he gave you subtle hints that he was pleased by your progress. In the last two weeks, you’d allowed a full wash down, cleaned hooves and the simplest of shoes, a well-brushed mane and tail, a woolen stable blanket and, most impressive of all, an embroidered leather (f/c) halter with your personal lead rope. The people didn’t often use the rope, however, because you still went wherever you chose. As for Gilbert, the two of you continued to grow

On this day, we find ourselves once more freed from the confines of Manteo township, and heading south in a southerly direction. However, we are not quite far south enough as to be in Key West, because if we were we would be seriously lost, and today's events would be completely lost to the history books (which, in my opinion, would be a most sad thing, and most sad things we want to avoid, as they are sad). Previously, and speaking of which I made an error in geography as Duck is to the north of Manteo. However, it is still to the south of Corolla, so my statement was technically correct if you take Corolla as our relative position to be south of. Anyways, only a week earlier, Jimmy had vanished once more whilst in the Corolla area. The only trace of him found were a pair of broken glasses, the frames dented and the lenses cracked. There were also accounts of a boat sailing along an inlet, but nobody could confirm such a thing. But this is not a week earlier. This is today, and

Indeed, we are once again in the state of Virginia, home of Jamestown, John Smith, the Norfolk and Western, the Star of Virginia...wow, I am really scraping the barrel here, aren’t I? Back in 1585, it had been the site chosen for the first English colony in North America. Although it had failed horribly, and the townsfolk had mysteriously vanished, it provided valuable lessons for the settlement of North America in the 17th Century at such varied locations as Williamsburg, Boston, and Jamestown (though not in that order, of course). Roanoke Island today is home to one major settlement of Manteo, in North Carolina. A fairly average place until a few years ago, there was nothing of much note there except a certain fellow. Yes, that’s right, the shapeshifting North Carolinian himself, James T. ‘Jimmy’ Hook! Last week had been most strange and bizarre.
