Story:
Harley had been released from the hospital a few days after his surgery, his enthusiasm wasn't shaken. But he hadn't skated by this injury without taking a serious hit. The doctors advised them that it was very likely he would have permanent vision loss in that eye becasue the fractures had caused the bones to press on an ocular nerve for too long causing a great deal of damage to it. It was likely that he would never regain a large margin of lost periphial vision. And the doctors suggested it made it too dangerous for him to continue to race. Harley wasn't having it.
He wasn't going to believe that this injury was it, that his career was over. Especially before he got to ride a mount into her final career race! there was a moment of pouting before Harley swallowed it all down and announced that he would figure it out, he'd have to. He wasn't going to put extra pressure on the team to make up for him, and he wasn't going to miss out on riding Sabrina for the final time when he'd ridden her most of her career!
So when he got home, instead of laying around the house like he really probably should have, he got up and out and started riding. Sure...the blind spot took him a while, but he needed to crash course this and move forward. Adjusting to how he had to ride was rough, the outside position was not the position for Triton in the Classic, he had two horses outside of him and he wouldn't be able to see them. Working with Colton and Cecily he learned to listen, to look and to trust his horse. But nothing, nothing could prepare him better than getting into a race!
Before this fall, before the beginning of the struggle to save Dollars life, which was ongoing, he had been working with Ex to get him ready for his first chase. Harley felt confident in the horse, felt like he could really do well in chase races...and so he went for it. Sure, it wasn't the safest or the smartest bet for his first race, but he wanted to get onto the track before the Breeders Cup...and hopefully feel more confident in his blind spot than he really did. A big piece of optimism was still there, and he put out that ray of sunshine inside him for all to see. But there was a little black smudge in it now, of doubt and fear. Fear that maybe...just maybe...this wasn't going to work out and he was never going to be able to ride again...
