Description
Getting familiar with Longchamp was an important part of training for Nichi, and today they'd decided to put him on a rope and take him out for a light jog with Buddy as his guide. The black stallion had been a bit off since the horses started to arrive for the Arc. As he had seen each of the younger racers be loaded into the stable he was let himself get a bit down, he felt like he was able to continue the job he'd been tasked with but he had started to pick up on the uneasiness of the team and it concerned him greatly.
The last thing he wanted to do was be sold again. After years of working hard for his first stable he had been let go, granted into the hands of Fox Harbor but still he had been thrown out of the home he knew and traveled around the world to kindly strangers. All because of an injury he'd sustained during training that put him out of racing for a year. But, to Nichi at least, he'd paid his dues and his record spoke for itself. The season before he'd been injured he'd put nothing but wins on the board for his first stable and had earned them quite a bit. But at Fox Harbor, despite his best efforts thus far he'd not put much in the coffers.
As they moved along he slowed down, dragging his hooves a bit and letting his head sag a bit. Maybe he was getting too old for this after all...Kit Kat had retired at this age from the Grand National circuit and she still talked about how she felt in her heart she could have jumped longer but in her hooves she knew she couldn't. Still, Nichi felt he could. He felt like his injury had healed well and he was back and stronger than he had been before. He just...wasn't showing it.
Before him he heard Buddy nicker and he lifted his head nickering in return, Buddy was telling him not to be down on himself. That he was still a brilliant horse, he just needed time. Nichi huffed, time indeed. It took him nearly two seasons before he ever won a race, throwing in several clunkers before finally finding his stride. Maybe he was going through the same thing again, he just hoped he could ease his new owners' tensions before they got too strong.
Raising his head he tossed it several times before rearing up slightly and kicking his forelegs, a loud whinny echoed from him and then he landed on all fours and cantered alongside Buddy. That's exactly what he was going to do, he was going to show his boss that he was worth the time and money they'd put in him. He was going to prove to himself that he was the same strapping racehorse he'd been before his injury, and he was going do his best to win.
Cantering alongside Buddy he was focused and determined, come race day he was going to put the youngsters to the test!
